2 Ms. Taormina

3 Office Hours Mondays 3:15 – 4:15 PM Room 2626

4 What is Advanced Functions and Modeling?
In Advanced Functions and Modeling, you will solidify and build upon concepts and applications from Algebra II, preparing you for college level math. For this reason, you will be treated like a college student in my class.

5 Class Expectations Comply with all KHS and WCPSS policies
Be Respectful Be Responsible Participate

6 Phones DO: Use your cellphone for designated activities.
Use your cellphone to check PowerSchool or PBworks. DON’T: Text. Listen to music. Charge your phone. This is your first and last warning.

7 Supplies 3-ring binder notebook paper pencils
graphing calculator (TI-83 or TI-84 recommended)

8 Tests Tests occur at the end of every unit.
If you miss a test, you MUST schedule a makeup time during my office hours. All students are eligible to retake two tests each quarter. The maximum grade on a retake will be an 80%. To be eligible for a retake, all homework from the unit must be completed.

9 Quizzes Quizzes will be given throughout each unit.
If you are absent for a quiz you will make it up the next day you are in class. Quizzes may be UNANNOUNCED!

10 Homework Assigned daily and checked for effort and completeness. ALL PROBLEMS MUST BE ATTEMPTED AND WORK MUST BE SHOWN. All homework will be recorded on a stamp sheet.

11 Bathroom Passes Go before or after class. If you have an emergency, you must go at a time that I am not teaching. You also cannot go during the first or last 15 minutes of class.

12 Makeup Work When you are absent or tardy, it is YOUR responsibility to copy the notes, obtain handout(s), and take any tests that you missed. All worksheets and handouts are posted online daily. If you lose your homework, you must download it from my website.

13 The Breakdown 1st Quarter: 40% 2nd Quarter: 40% Final Exam: 20% Tests: 50% Quizzes: 25% Classwork: 15% Homework: 10%

14 Knight Time Your class period will be extended one day each week for tutoring. You are required to stay for Knight Time if you are earning below 77%. If your grade is below 77% due to a missing assignment, it must be completed and turned in by Thursday of the previous week to ensure it will be included in your grade.

15 Take out a piece of paper.
Write down two questions that you have about me. Write down one question that you have about this course.

16 In your groups, choose one question from each category!
? ? ? ? ?

17 Pair up with someone near you!
Choose which one of you will be the artist, and which of you will be the describer. Don’t worry, you’ll have a chance to switch roles!

18 The Rules The describer will describe the picture to the artist.
You may not tell the artist the overall picture, just the lines and shapes included in the picture. (You can’t say “It’s a rocketship!”) The describer cannot correct the artist if they make a mistake.

19 Taboo Try to guess the word your classmate is describing. They may not say the “taboo” words listed on the clue card.

20 Brainstorm Why do you think we did these activities? Do they relate to math in any way?
