Welcome to Third Grade Parent Night Reading/Language Arts

Reading Workshop Mini Lesson: Students come to the carpet for a 10 minute lesson each day. Independent Reading: Students each have their own book bag filled with “just right” books for them. During this time they will read independently and will stop and jot down powerful thinking while they are reading. Conferences: I will meet with students individually or in groups to check in with what they are working on as a reader and what is going on in their book. I will see if they are applying the skills we have been learning in our mini lessons and set goals for them to work on as a reader. Strategy Groups: I will meet with groups of students who I feel all need to work on a particular skill. Book Clubs: Students will get to read the same book as other students in their group. They will decide how much they will read each week and will meet weekly to discuss their thinking with their group.

Home Access Center/Katy ISD APP: Grades may be viewed through these portals. If you need your password, please contact our registrar Joni Pistrui at 281-234-0500. This password is different than your child’s katy cloud login. If you ever have any questions or concerns about your child’s grades, please contact me.

Conferences Do to our early release days being full days of instruction now, we will not be having a face-to face conference with every parent. Please make sure your are checking Home Access Center on a regular basis and checking the graded work that comes home in the Wednesday Folder. If your child’s teacher has a concern regarding your child, we will be contacting you individually.

Resources Istation: Istation is a reading application that measures overall reading, text fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and word analysis. For students struggling in reading or any of the areas listed above, it is recommended that students go on istation for 20-30 minutes 3 times a week to improve such skills. Students can access istation through the katy cloud. BenchmarkU: BenchmarkU is an online book catalog. Students can log in through the Katy cloud. They can search for books based on their reading level. Readworks: Readworks is a website where you can download reading passages based on grade level, genre, or comprehension skill. Parents can create a free account to access. www.readworks.org These are the main resources that we feel would help your third grader. However, please visit the BHE 3rd grade website for more websites and apps that will give your child extra practice in all subject areas.
