◦ Review all contents of the Graded Work Bag. Take all of your child’s papers out, sign the sign-off sheet, and return the bag to school as soon as possible.

7. Lunch and Recess Lunch and Recess- 11:30 – 12:15
Due to our early lunch, students can bring a healthy snack to enjoy in the afternoon. Snacks are optional.

8. Report Card
Grades will be given for main subject areas: Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies.
Spelling, grammar, and writing are weighted subcategories of ELA. Comprehension – 50%, Spelling 10%
Writing – 25%, Grammar – 15%)
Sub skills are graded as Require Support (RS); Meeting Standard (MS); and Exceeding Standard (ES).

9. Math Curriculum
Math – Place Value, Addition, Multiplication & Division, Subtraction, Fractions, Time, Graphs, Geometry , Measurement

10. Math Instruction Each unit is pretested
Depending on the topic being studied, students may be taught math within our classroom. However, for some units, children may be assigned to Mrs. Reger for math instruction, based on their pretest results.
Application and problem solving are the main emphasis of the skills taught.
Fact mastery is crucial – please practice the basic facts with your child. Currently, addition and subtraction facts should be recalled fluently. Later, multiplication and division facts should be practiced.

11. ELA – English Language Arts
Students will read Story Town stories, reading passages from other resources, and at times, novels.
Tests will be based on cold reads and not the story from the reading book.
Comprehension will be assessed through quizzes and biweekly tests.
Vocabulary will be tested for every story.

12. Written Responses on Reading Tests
Responses are completed with the teacher for the first nine weeks.
Within the response, we will be grading for:
Restate the question as a topic sentence
Answer the question
Cite evidence from the passage or story
Explain how you know the evidence supports the answer
Sentence to conclude the paragraph

13. SPELLING Lists are aligned with StoryTown program
Three review or enrichment words are given with each list
Weekly dictation sentences are given –
one point per sentence.
Students may qualify for a challenge
spelling list based on pre test results.

14. Writing Instruction
The goal is to develop writing skills through a combination of skill instruction and creative writing.
Students will learn three types of writing: informative, opinion, and narrative

15. Science and Social Studies
Units rotate: one Science, then one Social Studies
Study guides will be provided when necessary
Formal tests are given – your child will need help studying!!!

16. Cursive Taught throughout the year
Students may be required to use it for specific assignments the last nine weeks. Students will be required to write their names on all papers in cursive
after all letters have been
learned.

17. Homework
Homework may not be given every night. It will only be given when practice on a skill is needed or a writing assignment is given.
Studying for tests will be required.
Expectation is that the homework is completed by the due date
Your child may need your guidance.
Reading each night is highly recommended. Math fact practice is also important. Extra fact practice may be given to students who have not mastered their facts.

18. Birthdays
If possible, notify me several days in advance if you plan to send in a treat
Please remember to send napkins and plates
Please- no cookie cakes – unless they are precut

19. Assignments, due dates, and test dates will be written in the students’ planners. This information will also be posted on my website. Please check frequently to stay informed about upcoming events.
