1 Mahaffey {3rd Grade} Open House!

2 All About Us Mrs. Whitney has been a teacher for years and Mrs. Baumel has been teaching for 18 years. Both of us are enjoying getting to know our Scotties and are super excited to be part of Mahaffey’s first year! Maurine, add years

3 Books Library is every Thursday and these books come home with the students. The classroom library is open every day and these books remain in our personal book bags for reading in class.

4 Classroom… Google style
Students have Google Classroom accounts and have used it for learning choices and reading responses.

5 Dojo We use Class Dojo to keep parents informed of classroom activities, announcements, and student behavior. Beginning next week, you may receive notifications for students who need to work on a skill. They will not lose Dojo points that they have already earned. Dojo points are able to be exchanged on Fridays for various privileges.

6 ELA Writing Workshop occurs daily to give students the opportunity to build fluency and develop their voice as authors. Grammar is embedded in mini lessons throughout the year. Handwriting focuses on using cursive.

7 FUNdraiser PTO Sponsored Scottie Social this Friday, September 23rd 5:30-8:00 3rd Grade is sponsoring baskets for UT and A&M so please send items! Bracelets are on sale now! Silent Auction including Pizza Party Lunch with Mrs. Baumel & Mrs. Whitney for Winner plus 5 guests!!! a

8 Grades & GT Be sure you have access to Skyward
Progress Reports go home in Wednesday Folders tomorrow. Please sign and return to school then we will give back for you to keep. Please be mindful that the beginning of the year is setting routines and procedures so not many grades have been taken. Be sure you have access to Skyward to view your child’s grades.

9 GT Referral Window The GT referral window for K-11 is August 29th- September 23rd. If you would like to refer your child to be screened for Klein’s Gifted and Talented Program, please stop by the front office and pick up a referral packet. Packets are available tonight in the front office. Completed referral packets must be brought back by the parent to the front office by  Friday, September 23rd. Please do not send the completed packet back with your child.  It is reviewed when you turn it in and any corrections must be made by you as the parent. 10 Homework Please check planners daily for assignments that are written down by the students. Reading Logs due every Monday with 5 entries and 1 reading response. Spelling Menu for weekly practice is checked each Thursday. Science and Math study guides are on Mrs. Whitney’s website. Add math/science HW info

11 Independence Third graders are learning to be more independent and responsible for their learning. This is a year-long focus for our Scotties! We will use technology, projects, and goal-setting experiences to develop their independence.

12 Just Be On Time Students may arrive beginning at 7:50 and the tardy bell rings at 8:15. Dismissal is at 3:20

14 Lunch and Recess You are welcome to eat lunch with your Scottie on any day of the week! Whitney’s lunch 11:48-12:18 Baumel’s lunch 11:50-12:20 Recess is 15 minutes prior to lunch.

15 Mathematics In third grade, students us place value of whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, geometry, measurement, personal finance literacy problem solving. Maurine do slide

19 Organization Students need to stay organized by having supplies ready every day, including pencils, red pens, interactive notebooks, homework folders, and planners.

20 Planner Students’ Planners will have homework assignments written down daily. Spelling words will be copied there weekly. The weekly Reading Response is written down on Tuesdays. Student login information and passwords are in the front of the planner. Please be sure the planner is at school every day.

22 Reading Independent reading is done daily following a mini-lesson for comprehension skills, fluency goals, or vocabulary. Read alouds are used weekly to gain vocabulary, model thinking, and practice our comprehension strategies. Guided Reading groups work together to focus on reading skills and to grow stronger as readers.

23 Science & Social Studies
. Social Studies in 3rd grade focuses on historical figures and their contributions, geography, economics, government, citizenship, and culture. Several projects and work stations will be conducted this year during social studies. Science in 3rd grade focuses on hands-on activities! Students will study science process skills, physical, Earth, and life sciences.
