Welcome to Meet the Teacher Night Mrs. Lovett & Mrs. Henault Third Grade

2. Please make sure you: Sign up for a Parent-Teacher conference.
Look for your child’s work on the walls and look through their desk.
If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up.

3. Communication
Positive school and home communication is vital to the success of your child.
If you have any questions and concerns you can us at and or write a note in your child’s agenda. We check the agendas every morning.
                                                                                                                                                             

4. Homework
Please go over the homework with your child and sign the agenda at the bottom of the page each night.
Please provide a quiet, well lit area for your child to do their homework.
Spelling homework and math homework must be returned each day.
Homework should not take longer than minutes (not counting the 20 min. of independent reading). If it takes longer, please have your child stop working and write me a note in their agenda.
Generally no HW on Friday or holidays, just reading!

5. Notes Please send in a note when your child has been absent.
Work missed needs to be made up in school and/or at home.
If you plan on picking up your child early/at the end of the day, or he/she is taking a different bus, please send in a note.

6. Birthday Celebrations
If you would like to send in a treat to celebrate your child’s birthday:
Please let us know ahead of time through the agenda or so we can set up a time for this important event.
Any treats must be store-bought and healthy for example, fruit, pretzels, granola bars, or mini-muffins.
Non-food items such as bookmarks, pencils and stickers could be shared instead of a snack.

7. Speaking and Listening
Language Arts
Our emphasis is on:
1.Comprehension of key ideas and details- retelling and summarizing a story, cause and effect, and characterization
2.Understanding the craft and structure -vocabulary, literal vs. nonliteral language, point of view
3. Integration of knowledge- being able to compare and contrast stories and analyze illustrations and explain how they add to a story
4. Reading a range of texts and level of text complexity –being able to read and understand different genres and decode various levels of texts.
5. Responding to literature – can personally respond to different genres and can self-select books.
Writing
Students will be writing for many different purposes (persuasive, narrative, informative/research, reading responses, reflections, revisions, on-demand writing, and published writing).
Speaking and Listening
Students will be presenting their ideas and knowledge
They will be participating in whole class lessons as well as collaborating with their peers on projects. They will have to comprehend the ideas of others and share out their own ideas.

8. Language Arts (cont.)
We will be using a combination of resources, including both Journeys Common Core and the Engage NY Modules .We will also use supplemental chapter books and other nonfiction books as well.
We will be implementing the workshop approach in reading. Students will be instructed in both whole class and small group settings. They will also do various centers and independent/partner work daily.
The children are required to read at least 25 books independently this year.
NYS ELA Assessment is in April.

9. Spelling & Writing
Students will get a list of spelling words on Monday. They will be tested on the words and phonics pattern on Friday. There will also be two dictated sentences which will require them to apply all of their grammar and editing skills.
Students are to complete a spelling practice sheet each night and return it the following day for us to check. Thursday is a study day for Friday’s test. Students will also learn grammar and apply their spelling and grammar rules to their everyday learning.
Students will be writing for many different purposes (persuasive, narrative, informative/research, reading responses, reflections, revisions, on-demand writing, and published writing).

10. Math
Students will be learning the Common Core math standards by using the Go Math program and EngageNY modules, along with supplemental materials.
Typically students will have a page (front and back) of homework each day that goes along with the lesson.
Students are to memorize their +,-,x facts by the end of the year.
The NYS Common Core Math Assessment is in May.

11. Science
                                                                                                                                                             
There are four main units of study which include Plants, Coding, Heredity, Weather & Climate, and Forces & Interactions.
Units are taught through the use of science kits, non-fiction literature, teacher demonstrations, research, observations, hands-on labs, use of computers, and outdoor activities.

12. Social Studies
The curriculum focuses on the characteristics of communities around the world.
We will focus on the five main aspects all communities share: geography, history, economics, politics, and culture.
