1 Welcome to 3rd Grade! Presented by: Kayla Proch kproch@houstonisd.org
Please feel free to me with any questions. Please write a “beary” special note to your child. Presented by: Kayla Proch Welcome to 3rd Grade!

2 Please write down any questions on a sticky note
My History… This is my 4th year teaching third grade at Roberts ES. Before that, I taught 2nd grade in HISD at Oates Elementary. I love being apart of the Roberts community. It is a great place to work with students that love learning and are ready to meet any challenge. Please write down any questions on a sticky note

3 In Third Grade.. This year your child will be challenged to exercise critical thinking skills in all areas of the curriculum. You can assist your child’s growth by talking to them and asking open-ended questions. When your child asks “why,” instead of telling them the answer, ask what they think the answer might be. Explore the community. Let your child try to figure out how they fit in and what they can do to improve it.

4 What our day looks like…

9 Graded Work Graded work will go home in Tuesday folders every week.
Please go over all grades with your child and keep up with them on GradeSpeed.

10 Homework… Math… Reading… Wordly Wise… Spelling…
3rd Grade: 30 – 45 minutes, not including reading time. So… Spelling: minutes Math: minutes Reading Comprehension: minutes Independent reading: 30 minutes

11 Research shows that children must read 60 minutes a day to develop fluency and maintain their reading level. We read 30 minutes a day during school and 30 minutes are assigned for homework. In order to excel, students must read as often as they can beyond that. You may read with your child during this time, but the ultimate goal is independent reading. Reading books that are too difficult will only frustrate them. With the increased rigor of STAAR, we will be focusing even more on higher level thinking skills. Please ask questions to help with this development. Reading…

12 Reading Letters Our reading homework helps students react and respond to what they have read. Students can record how they feel in their letters about the characters, share insight about the theme and plot, and expand their overall enjoyment of the literature. Your child started keeping a Reading Notebook last week. The Reading Notebook will be used daily at school and at home. They will be collected once a week.

13 Homework will be in a packet that is given every Monday
Homework will be in a packet that is given every Monday. Students will not have homework on Friday (besides reading). If your child is absent, I will still expect the homework pages to be finished (The child can finish over the weekend and bring back Monday).

14 How Quick Are You? How fast can you complete your addition facts?
Don’t forget to study your facts! How Quick Are You? How fast can you complete your addition facts? Children in third grade should be able to recall their basic addition facts within 4 seconds! Can you do that? With extra time left over from math homework, please review facts.

15 Wordly Wise and Spelling
Wordly Wise Lessons last for 2 weeks. Spelling is new every week. So, every Friday there is a Spelling Test and every other Friday is a Wordly Wise Test. Wordly Wise is a way to learn vocabulary and what they mean. It is not focused on spelling. We will mainly work on this in class, but they can study at home. For spelling, we will use the activities in their spelling spirals. They will choose a different activity each night that week and will complete it in their spirals. Wordly Wise and Spelling
