Before considering dual enrollment (MOWR): If you plan on applying to a competitive university, ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) courses are the BEST choice for a competitive transcript

Dual Enrollment (MOWR) vs Advanced Placement Courses Dual Enrollment (MOWR) allows eligible students to take college level coursework for credit towards both high school and college graduation requirements, tuition free. Advanced Placement (AP) courses are College Board, college-level courses and exams, with the potential for earning college credit while still in high school.

The benefits of AP Colleges may wonder why a student has chosen to take an intro class at a college if there’s an AP class in the same subject available at the high school. Admission officers know that high school AP classes may well prove more challenging than an intro-level college course. Competitive universities want to see AP courses on your transcript! In general, out-of-state colleges accept AP over Dual Enrollment (MOWR).

What is dual enrollment or MOWR What is dual enrollment or MOWR? (For this presentation we may refer to Dual Enrollment as “DE”) A program enabling Georgia high school students to earn high school and college credits simultaneously. Over the last three years many improvements have been made to the Dual Enrollment Program.

Dual Enrollment As of July 1, 2015: The name “Dual Enrollment” changed to “MOWR”. In the Fall of 2017-- Because Dual Enrollment was more commonly recognized--GADOE changed MOWR back to Dual Enrollment. Eligible Grade Levels---Now open to students in grades 9-12, however most of our local colleges only accept juniors and seniors. The GSFC (Georgia Student Finance Commission) pays for the tuition, mandatory fees, and books for these courses. In some cases, students may be expected to pay for supplies, equipment, etc.

Two DUAL Options: Enroll at a four-year university to get a head start on college coursework. Enroll at technical college to earn a: Technical Certificate Technical Associate Degree Technical Diploma

Dual Enrollment: The Good News and The (potentially) Bad News When DE funds pay for tuition, your HOPE Scholarship money will NOT be impacted. (DE funds do not come out of your HOPE Scholarship allotment). HOWEVER………….the grades you get in these DE courses CAN and DO affect your HOPE eligibility.

If you happen to withdraw from or FAIL a DE course it can NEGATIVELY affect: Graduation from high school University admissions after high school HOPE eligibility So make sure you’re ready for the challenge of taking college courses while in high school! You must have a car and be able to commute to campus, or you may take classes online in our virtual computer lab. (Remember you must get admitted to the university/technical college first!).

First step in the Dual Enrollment application process If you are interested in taking a Dual Enrollment course, you must first: Complete the college or university’s application by the deadline for that particular semester. Have your test scores sent to the desired school by the application deadline. Universities - SAT or ACT scores Technical colleges – COMPASS/ACCUPLACER test scores Complete the following documents found on the JHS website: JHS DUAL ENROLLMENT (Dual Enrollment) CHECKLIST JHS DUAL ENROLLMENT (Dual Enrollment) ADVISEMENT GUIDELINES. Bottom line…………………..you have to be accepted to the university or technical college to participate in DUAL ENROLLMENT (Dual Enrollment).

-UNG application deadline: March 15th (tentative) To participate in Dual Enrollment Fall of 2018: Complete the JHS DUAL ENROLLMENT (MOWR) ADVISEMENT GUIDELINES by March 21, 2018 Apply to your choice of university or technical college by the deadline date: -UNG application deadline: March 15th (tentative) - LANIER TECH application deadline: March 24 (tentative) - UGA application deadline: April 15 (tentative) (check the colleges’ websites for deadline updates) ** Remember ----you have to have SAT or ACT scores (university or technical) or Compass/ACCUPLACER test scores (technical only).

Remember!!! Academic Dual Enrollment courses will count toward HOPE Scholarship eligibility, meaning: The grades you make in these Dual Enrollment courses DO count toward HOPE scholarship eligibility! If, for you, attending college depends on HOPE eligibility, consider Dual Enrollment carefully because your HOPE GPA could drop! If you decide to utilize Dual Enrollment, you must still take all associated high school Milestone tests if applicable.
