Reading: Common Core for 2nd Grade A combination of standards addressing both Fiction and Nonfiction… NON Fiction Fiction Folktales & fables Use questioning to aid in understanding details of a text (who, what, when, where, why, how) Characters: how they change & how they respond to challenges Story structure: beginnings, endings, transitions Point of View, Dialogue Understanding characters, setting & plot by analyzing text and illustrations Compare and contrast 2+ versions of the same story Reads on grade level (grades 2-3) literature & poetry proficiently Use questioning to aid in understanding details of a text (who, what, when, where, why, how) Identifying main idea and supporting details of paragraphs as well as full length texts Describe the connection between historical events, scientific ideas, or technical procedures Determine the meanings of unknown words and phrases in an on grade level text Know and use text features: captions, bold words, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons, etc) Identify the purpose of a text Explain how images/diagrams clarify a text Compare and Contrast points presented by two texts Reads and comprehends informational text including: history/social studies, science and technical texts (at grades 2-3 level text)

At-home Math activities Math: Common Core for 2nd grade Know addition facts to 20 Know subtraction facts to 20 Practice counting and using money (coins) Practice telling time Adding and subtracting within 1000, with and without regrouping Number sense: expanded form, number names, base-10 blocks, < > = Odd & Even: pairing, counting by 2’s Skip counting forwards and backwards within 1000 Add up to four 2-digit numbers Use mental math to add and subtract 10 or 100 from a number Measurement: inches, centimeters & measurement tools Time: telling time to the nearest 5 minutes Solve problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickles, and pennies.
