2 Welcome to Tea and Talk with the first grade team
Welcome to Tea and Talk with the first grade team! This morning's schedule: 8:00-8:15: Cover standards and topics of first grade 8:15-8:40: Breakout sessions in your child’s classroom regarding individual classroom rules, procedures, and expectations.

3 Please save all questions specific to your student for a conference which you can schedule with your child’s teacher.

4 Literacy •Beginning of year: C-D •Middle of year: G-H
•Benchmarks, according to mClass, are as follows: •Beginning of year: C-D •Middle of year: G-H •End of year: I-J •This year, writing has been removed from the mClass test and the oral comprehension questions have been made more challenging. Writing will still be given as a reference point for the classroom teacher •First Grade makes the largest jump in mClass with an expected 6 levels of growth.

5 Literacy Students are placed in reading groups based on TRC and DIBELS data These groups do change during the year as scores change. When students are not meeting with their teacher they are working in one of the following work stations: Working on Writing Reading to self Reading to someone Word work Listening to reading

Kindergarten- EOY 13 of 23 of Kindergarten standards begin: With prompting & support... Other standards include: Identify parts of book Demonstrate understanding of print Engage in group reading activities Recognize common types of texts Read high frequency words Demonstrate understanding of spoken words Reads at a level C/D (3 or 4 levels) Sight words- 25 First Grade- End of 1st Quarter 0 of the 1st Quarter, First Grade standards begin: With prompting and support... Only 2 of all 23 standards begin: With prompting & support- read poetry & informational texts (3rd & 4th quarters) First Grade- EOY Sight words- 100 TRC mClass- needs to make at least 6 levels of growth

7 Writing •Students will be writing a variety of texts this year including: narrative (small moments), informational (All About & How-To), and opinion pieces. •Objectives include: focus, organization, conventions and support, and elaboration. •We currently are talking about narratives and small moments including an introduction, three events in chronological order, and a conclusion that includes a feeling.

Kindergarten- EOY Narratives Writes about a single event or several loosely linked events Uses drawings, dictations and writing to tell what happened Tells the order in which the events occured Provides a reaction about what happened First Grade- End of 1st Quarter Narratives Writes a narrative recounting 2 or more appropriately sequenced events focused on one topic Includes temporal words (first, next, last) to signal event order Includes details about what happened Includes a topic sentence and closing sentence Includes correct capitalization & punctuation

9 Math Students will learn how to express math in a variety of ways.
Ex. (using manipulatives, pictures, and writing.) Students will be learning a variety of strategies, not necessarily memorizing. Students typically need the most practice with comprehension of word problems. We will cover: Operations and algebraic thinking: problem solving; equality; unknown addend Numbers and operations in base ten: tens and ones; comparing numbers; mentally find 10 more/less; two digit plus one digit addition Measurement and Data: collecting, organizing and analyzing data with 3 categories; time to the hour and half hour Geometry: defining & non-defining attributes; composite shapes; partitioning shapes Money: identifying nickels, dimes & quarters; relate their value to pennies

Let’s Compare - Math Kindergarten- EOY Problem solving- find the total within 10 Fluency within 5 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities Understand the last number said tells how many First Grade - End of 1st Quarter Problem Solving- Find the unknown addend within 20 Fluency within 10 Relationship between addition and subtraction Understand that numbers contain other numbers and can be decomposed in different ways

11 Science Earth in the Universe- features of the sky; observable changes in the moon Force and motion- pushes and pulls; magnets Earth systems, processes, and structures- Rocks & Earth Materials Ecosystems- Needs of plants & animals; habitats of living things •York is also a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) school. We have a STEM facilitator who works on projects with us pertaining to standards we are studying. These projects are in addition to school wide STEM projects and projects sent home by the grade level. These projects are done at school and in the classroom. •We participate in grade level STEM challenges (these are mandatory). •We participate in school wide STEM challenges (these are not mandatory but encouraged.)

12 Social Studies I am a citizen of many communities (rules of the classroom, school, and the community) •Our community celebrates (holidays and celebrations around the world) •I can find my way around my community (maps and landforms; goods & services; supply & demand) •We care for our community (reduce, reuse, recycle)

13 Standards Based Grading
Level 4- Student consistently demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the standards, concepts and skills taught during this quarter. “Since, I can do/understand this. I can figure out new things” Level 3- Student consistently demonstrates an understanding of the standards, concepts and skills taught during this quarter. “I get it! I can do it well!” Level 2- Student is approaching an understanding of the standards, concepts and skills taught during this quarter. “I almost get it but I need some help. Level 1- Student does not yet demonstrate an understanding of the standards, concepts and skills taught during this quarter. “I don’t get it. I need help.”
