Notes: *Proteins* Protein is made up of chains of amino acids that link together to form a protein. Proteins serve to build and repair body tissue, make hormones, and parts of the immune system that help to fight off infections. They form parts of muscle, hair, skin, nails, connective tissue, and glands.

4. Proteins can also serve as a source of energy. 5 4. Proteins can also serve as a source of energy. 5. Each gram of protein has four calories. 6. 10% to 15% of food intake should come from protein. 7. Meats, fish, legumes, nuts, eggs, and dairy products are major sources of proteins.

8. Animal-based products (such as beef, pork, veal, fish, poultry, eggs, and most dairy products) have complete proteins because they contain all the essential amino acids. 9. Most plant proteins (nuts, peas, and dried beans) lack sufficient amounts of essential amino acids (building blocks). Remember: Proteins are nutrients your body uses to build, repair, and maintain cells and tissues. (They are made up of chemical building blocks called amino acids).
