Protein Nutrition 2102

Our Bodies and Protein Our bodies are made up of 18 – 20% protein by weight. Our muscles are 22% protein and 70% water. 10-15% of our daily calorie intake should come from protein. Protein needs to be replenished everyday.

Functions of protein Provides amino acids which are the building block of the body. Amino acids build the body structure and repair body tissues. Our body makes approximately11 amino acids. The other 9 must be obtained from the food we eat. These 9 amino acids are called essential amino acids.

Functions of protein Protein helps the body build antibodies which fight infections. Our hormones and enzymes are made from protein. They coordinate and regulate body functions and neuromuscular functions.

Complete Protein A protein food that contains all the essential amino acids. Sources of a complete protein: meat, milk, eggs, and fish

Plant Protein Protein foods that carry amino acids but must be combined with other foods to create essential proteins. Sources are seeds, beans, lentils.

To Much Protein? Excess protein stores as fat in your body.
Excess protein takes more water to breakdown and therefore causes your kidneys to work harder.

To Little Protein Insufficient protein in the diet may manifest itself in several ways: lack of energy stunted growth in children lowered resistance to disease
