The Present Tense We use the present tense to talk about an action that always or often takes place, or that is happening now.

The Present Tense Ellos comen ensaladas. Nosotros estudiamos mucho. They eat salads. They are eating salads. Nosotros estudiamos mucho. We study a lot. We are studying a lot.

The Present Progressive When you want to emphasize that an action is happening right now, use the present progressive tense. The present progressive tense is formed by using a present tense form of estar plus the present participle.

Let’s review the forms of estar! yo estoy nosotros estamos nosotras tú estás vosotros estáis vosotras Ud. él está ella (“it”) Uds. ellos están ellas (plural “it”)

The Present Progressive estar + the present participle = the present progressive tense The present participle is formed by dropping the -ar, -er, or -ir ending of the infinitive and adding -ando for AR verbs or -iendo for ER and IR verbs.

The Present Progressive Here are some examples of the present progressive tense: Ellos están comiendo ensaladas. They are eating salads. (right now) Ella está comiendo el desayuno. She is eating breakfast. (right now) Yo estoy comiendo una manzana. I am eating an apple. (right now)
