1 Present Progressive When you want to emphasize that an activity is happening RIGHT NOW, use the present progressive tense.

2 Present progressive is the equivalent of the form in English
-ING The dogs are playing with the toy. You are driving too slowly! I am talking on the phone. He is reading the instructions. Ana is taking pictures.

3 Present progressive is a compound verb, which means that the verbs is actually made up of two words.

4 To form the present progressive tense, use the present tense of ESTAR and a present participle:
ESTAR – To be + Present Participle Estoy Estamos For –AR verbs: add –ANDO Estás Estáis For –ER verbs: add –IENDO Está Están For –IR verbs: add –IENDO

5 Present Participles = -ING
DUCHAR COMER ESCRIBIR DUCH ANDO AR COM IENDO ER ESCRIB IENDO IR showering eating writing

6 They fall into two groups.
The participles we will use in this chapter are irregular and will require a spelling change. They fall into two groups.

7 For –IR stem-changing verbs, the “E” changes to “I” and the “O” changes to “U”:
SENTIR MORIR DECIR SENT SINT IENDO IR MOR MUR IENDO IR DEC DIC IENDO IR saying/telling feeling dying Other –IR stem-changing verbs include: Repetir, preferir, vestirse, pedir, seguir, servir, competir, despedir, sugerir, reír, mentir, sonreír, and dormir.

8 Other verbs that have this change include: caer(se), destruir and oír.
For –ER and –IR verbs whose stem ends in a vowel, the “I” in –IENDO will change to “Y”: LEER TRAER CREER CRE IENDO ER YENDO LE YENDO IENDO ER TRA YENDO IENDO ER thinking / believing reading bringing Other verbs that have this change include: caer(se), destruir and oír.

9 Don’t forget - if there’s a __________ ____________ in the sentence, the direct object pronoun gets _________ to the verb. PRESENT PARTICIPLE ATTACHED LO Susi y Mari están escribiendo ahora. el cheque Susi y Mari están ___ ahora. escribiendo escribiéndo LO Participle Object Pronoun When you attach to the end of the participle, you add a syllable to the word, which messes with the natural stress. HOWEVER… The participle will need a written accent over the “A” in –ANDO or the “E” in –IENDO or –YENDO. THEREFORE…
