4. Present Progressive The “ing” verbs

5. Present Progressive  Is used to say what is happening right now. –Rosa is singing. –We are eating.  To form the present progressive, you must combine a form of “estar” with the endings –ando (-ar) /-iendo (-er/-ir).  “estar” + root(-ando/-iendo) –Rosa está cantando. –Nosotros estamos comiendo.

6. Try it:  I am writing. –I am  Estoy –Escribir  Iendo –Estoy escribiendo.  You are talking. –You are  estás –Hablar  Ando –Estás hablando.

7. Tomar en nota:  If the stem of an “-er” or “-ir” verb ends in a vowel (leer): –Form the present participle by changing the “I” in “iendo” to a “Y” –Estoy leyendo.  I am reading.  The verbs IR and VENIR are not usually used in the present progressive. –Use simple present instead:  ¿Vienes a la fiesta?  No, voy a la biblioteca.

8. Location  Direct object & Reflexive pronouns can go –Before the conjugated form of estar:  ¿la tarea? La estoy haciendo.  ¿Mis hijos? Se están bañando. –Or attached to the end of the present participle:  ¿la tarea? Estoy haciendola.  ¿Mis hijos? Están bañandose. –Afeitarse (to shave) –Me estoy afeitando –Estoy afeitándome
