HEALTH, EXERCISE, FITNESS, PERFORMANCE

HEALTH Definition: “A STATE OF COMPLETE MENTAL, PHYSICAL AND SOCIAL WELL-BEING , NOT MERELY THE ABSENCE OF DISEASE AND INFIRMITY” How do you think we can decide who is healthy? Task – Name how it is to be healthy in each area, physical, social, mental… Ask the group in 2’s to come up with 1 reason for each component how you could be healthy physically (appropriate weight, free of illness, muscular), mentally (positive attitude, focused, happy, content, calm) and Socially (food and shelter, lots of friends, active social life). Ask them to relate this to how they would perform in their chosen sport.

Discussion What else can affect our health? What about infectious diseases, vaccinations, diet, poor sanitation, your relatives, your job? Do you think our health is better than the USA or poorer countries? Why? How can we ensure we have good health? Note down as many points as you can think of.

Health Health can be improved by taking part in exercise as it builds up fitness levels. Regular exercise also helps to keep people healthy by preventing illness. YOU HAVE NO COLDS, FLU, ACHES OR PAINS, AND YOU CAN RUN A MILE IN 6 MINUTES. BUT DOES THAT MEAN YOU ARE HEALTHY AND FIT?

EXERCISE Definition: A FORM OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY DONE PRIMARILY TO IMPROVE ONE’S HEALTH AND PHYSICAL FITNESS. Write down what do you do as exercise How frequently do you do this?

Copy into books, in the Centre draw/list what you do by way of exercise

FITNESS Definition: THE ABILITY TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF THE ENVIRONMENT What are the demands of your environment? What do you do on an average day? Again, how does fitness affect your performance???

THINK? Think about the position you play in a team sport? Is there another position who needs to be fitter than you? FOR EXAMPLE… What are the demands for a GK in football compared to a striker, or a Centre in netball compared to Goal Shooter?

THINK? Who do you think is fitter than you in the class? How do you know? Is it that they can run faster or do they have a more challenging lifestyle? TASK… Write down all the activity that you do in a typical week Can you do this without getting tired?

How are Health, Exercise and Fitness linked? To be healthy you need to exercise Exercise The fitter you are the better your performances will be Fitness If you exercise you will improve your fitness Performance

What do we mean by performance? Write the definition of PERFORMANCE Read the paragraph on page 32 List three things that would make up a good performance Example: 1. I scored three goals 2. I played the whole match without getting tired 3. I didn’t give the ball away

Definitions Turn to the back of your book, Glossary Make a set of Memory Game cards and write down the definitions of; Health Exercise Fitness Performance In one sentence or diagram explain the link between the three terms

The components of skill related fitness and how they are important during physical performance The five sections of health related exercise and why they are important during physical activity

Come up with a method for remembering the 6 parts of SRF Skill Related Fitness We need particular fitness if we wish to take part in sport. Each sport requires its own type of fitness and this is called SKILL RELATED FITNESS The components of fitness are; agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time and speed Come up with a method for remembering the 6 parts of SRF

The ability to use two or more parts of the body together Definitions The ability to change the direction of the body quickly and to control the movement of the whole body The ability to use two or more parts of the body together The ability to undertake strength performances quickly. Power = strength x speed The time between the presentation of a stimulus and the onset of movement The ability to retain the centre of mass of the body over the base of support with reference to static, or dynamic conditions of movement, shape and orientation The differential rate at which an individual is able to perform a movement or cover a distance in a period of time

Which components are needed by….? For each component of skill related fitness you need to come up with a sporting example to show how a sports person would use this aspect of fitness Use pages 38-40 of the book to help you

Skill Related Fitness Component Example of how it is used Homework Make a note of your practical activity List the skill-related fitness aspects that you think are important for your sport/activity Minimum of 3 examples Activity Netball Skill Related Fitness Component Example of how it is used Agility Dodging to get away from a defender Balance To lean over and mark my opponent

Health Related Fitness There is a minimum level of fitness that we all need to have to have good health. We call this HEALTH RELATED FITNESS (HRF) The 5 parts of this are; Cardiovascular fitness, Muscular endurance, Muscular strength, Flexibility and Body composition Come up with a method for remembering the 5 parts of HRF Rhyme, song, acronym, story

Must complete table by searching for information around the room TASK: You must know and understand these terms, and be able to explain, apply and describe them Groups of 4 Must complete table by searching for information around the room Only 1 at a time – must have bib! Need to find; Picture Definition Sporting example for each of the 5 components of HRF

Cardiovascular Fitness Picture Definition Sporting Example How would you improve this? Cardiovascular Fitness Muscular Strength Muscular Endurance Flexibility Body Composition

Cardiovascular Fitness Picture Definition Sporting Example How would you improve this? Cardiovascular Fitness The ability to exercise the entire body for long periods of time Marathon runner 30 minute jog Muscular Strength The amount of force a muscle can exert against a resistance Driving through in a rugby scrum Bicep curls = 8 x reps of 15 kg weight Muscular Endurance The ability to use the voluntary muscles many times without getting tired 200 metre front crawl race Bicep curls = 15 x reps of 5kg weight Flexibility The range of movement possible at a joint Gymnast – floor sequence Plyometric stretches as part of warm-up Body Composition The percentage of body weight that is fat, muscle and bone Mesomorph Healthy balanced diet

Think? How can we measure Body Composition? What area of HEALTH would the 5 components of HRF relate to?

Which athlete’s need which components of HRF? All 5 aspects of HRF are needed by every athletes, but not necessarily all at once or in equal amounts Think about the following athletes, which ones do they primarily need?
