2 1.1 Fitness for Life Physical fitness is the ability of your body systems to work together efficiently to allow you to be healthy and effectively perform activities of daily living.

3 1.1 Fitness for Life Health is the state of optimal physical, mental, and social well-being. Wellness is a state of being that enables a person to reach his or her highest potential; includes intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual health.

4 1.1 Fitness for Life Physical activity is movement using the large muscles of the body. Exercise is physical activity done especially for the purpose of becoming physically fit.

5 1.1 Fitness for Life The Cycle of Physical Activity Benefits is a diagram which shows that regular physical activity leads to improved physical fitness of which both provide benefits to health and wellness.

6 1.1 Fitness for Life Fitness, health, and wellness benefits of performing regular exercise include looking good, feeling good, enjoying life, and meeting emergencies.

7 Exercise Basics The three main stages to a workout include warm-up, workout, and cool-down. A warm-up usually consists of a heart warm-up and a muscle warm-up.

To perform many of the activities that you will do in future weeks, you will need to be able to determine your one-minute heart rate. Normal resting heart rate is 80 b/m.

Cardiovascular fitness is the ability to exercise your entire body for long periods of time without stopping.

Strength is the amount of force your muscles can produce.

Muscular endurance is the ability to use your muscles many times without tiring.

Flexibility is the ability to use your joints fully through a wide range of motion.

Body fatness is the percentage of body weight that is made up of fat.

Hypokinetic conditions are health problems caused partly by lack of regular physical activity.

Agility is the ability to change the position of your body quickly and to control your body’s movements.

Balance is the ability to keep an upright posture while standing still or moving.

Coordination is the ability to use your senses together with your body parts or to use two or more body parts together.

Power is the ability to use strength quickly.

Reaction time is the amount of time it takes to move once you realize the need to act.

Speed is the ability to perform a movement or cover a distance in a short period of time.
