DEVIANCE!

Functionalist Perspective on Deviance Stigma- The mark of deviance Can be physical or implied/labeled Examples? Anomie-Unclear or unaccepted norms Part of Strain Theory (outgrowth of norms, values, and structure) Suicide as example

Conflict Perspective Social inequality and competition is why deviance occurs We “label” people based on many factors to give them a disadvantage. Common with class conflict Lower class is more deviant

Interactionist Perspective Control Theory Deviance is natural and occurs through conformity Social Ties explain CONFORMITY Example Teacher/Student Classroom rules Good Behavior Those who reject this social tie are deviant

Conformity Miscellaneous Cultural Transmission Deviance is learned Differential association The people you “hang with” determine your behavior Techniques of Neutralization Suspend morals and be deviant

Labeling Theory Examples? Labels people are given affect their own and others’ perceptions of them, thus channeling their behavior either into deviance or into conformity. What does this mean? A person has no choice but to act how people label them to. Examples? Poverty-Crime Teenagers-Immature and troublemakers

Labeling Theory Primary Deviance Secondary Deviance primary deviance is a term that describes deviant behavior in an individual (occasional deviance) Secondary Deviance when a negative label gets applied so publicly and so powerfully that it becomes part of that individual's identity Ex. Criminals released back into society will sometimes continue their life of crime

Crime and Deviance What is crime? Deviance prohibited by law What is the difference between a criminal and a deviant? Criminology-Study of Criminal behavior

Types of Crime Violent -Murder Property- Burglary Victimless- Prostitution White Collar – ”Rich Peoples Crimes” http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/nc/charlotte/crime/

White Collar Crime Crimes that are committed by "respectable people" during the course of their occupation Embezzling, price fixing, insider buying, fraud, falsification of expense accounts (or other records), and theft of materials. Casts doubt on the notion that poverty creates crime

Random Deviant Terms Racial Profiling-Non Whites are more deviant Plea Bargaining Corrections Recidivism-Repeated criminal behavior

The Purpose of Corrections Retribution- Punishing Criminals Deterrence- Discourage future Crimes Rehabilitate- Reform Criminal Behavior Social Protection- Protect the non deviant “conformers”
