Agenda Video: Read 180 Introduction Video Discussion: Who needs Read 180 and System 44? How is placement for Read 180 and System 44 Determined? What we learn from the Reading Inventory? Who Needs Read 180? aiken county public school district

Who Needs Read 180? Using your sentence strip, complete the sentence frame: Students who need Read 180 are _________________. Truth Is... Students who score in the Intensive and Strategic Range on their Reading Inventory Test NEED Read 180, but all can benefit from Read 180. aiken county public school district

Placement in Read 180 Students should be placed in Read 180 and System 44 based on their Fall Reading Inventory Scores.  Once students qualify for Read 180, they are then placed on one of 4 levels. This is determined by the numerical score they receive and also determines the level of books they read. (SRI Results for Placement Handout) If students score below 600, they should take the Phonics Inventory.  Based on the results of the Phonics Inventory, the teacher recommends the students for either Read 180 or System 44. (Screening Overview Handout) aiken county public school district

Phonics Inventory and System 44 The Phonics Inventory is designed to identify students who struggle, not only with comprehension, but also with decoding and pronunciation of words.  The Phonics Inventory assesses student knowledge in letter recognition, sight word recognition and nonsense word decoding. Placement for System 44 is usually determined by a students score from the Phonics Inventory from the Fluency Score and Decoding Status. (How SPI Results are Reported) aiken county public school district

What we learn from the Phonics Inventory? Students who are Pre Decoders or Beginning Decoders should be placed in System 44 If a student is a Developing Decoder, their Reading Inventory Scores and *other interventions should also be considered before placement in either Read 180 or System 44 Advanced Decoders should automatically be placed in Read 180. aiken county public school district

Can a Student Exit System 44? YES, Just as students can exit Read 180; they can exit System 44 and enter Read 180. Once students have taken the Winter Reading Inventory, the process of system placement should start over. aiken county public school district

Exiting System 44 Students MUST: Complete all series in the System 44 program OR Be given the Phonics Inventory (PI) and score as an Advancing Decoder; aiken county public school district

Exiting Read 180 Read180 Exit Criteria – Description of Elements For teacher use Element Description Lexile Score The Lexile Score is the only item that MUST be met for exit. The Lexile score must meet the requirement for Core or better in order to be considered for exit. Additional Data Points SAM, Read180 reports, and PowerSchool will be accessed to determine the additional data points to consider for exit. Exit Score: 6/6 In this scenario, the student scored “yes” on all 6 data points and is automatically able to exit the program. Exit Score: 5/6 In this scenario, the student meets the Lexile requirement as well as 4 of the other data points. In order to exit in this case, the teacher must provide a written qualifier to justify the exit and the principal must initial approval. aiken county public school district

Exiting Read 180 Continued Read180 Exit Criteria – Description of Elements For teacher use Element Description Do not Exit Score: 5/6 Option 1: In this scenario, the student meets the Lexile requirement as well as 4 of the other data points. However, the teacher does not feel this is enough to exit the program at this time. Option 2: In this scenario, the student meets all requirements except the Lexile score and therefore cannot exit Read180. Do no Exit Score 4/6 or less In this scenario, the student meets 4 or less data points and therefore cannot exit Read180 Decision The teacher and/or principal should note the final exit decision. If the student is recommended for exit, the teacher must follow up with a letter home to the parent. In addition, the Exit Checklist must include the new course the student will take 2nd semester. aiken county public school district

Exiting Read 180 Continued Semester: 1 or 2 (circle) Descriptor Yes No Lexile Score: Must be at or above the CORE (non-negotiable)  Grade Level rSkills average over at least 2 tests at or above 80% ELA grade at or above 70% Instructional Software Scores all at or above 85% for Comprehension and Vocabulary Software completion at or above 5-6 segments per semester (10-12 per year) Grade Level rSkills writing score (rubric) of 3 or 4 aiken county public school district
