1 The System 44 Classroom Mrs. Link & Mrs. Ellison

2 The System 44 Classroom System 44 is an interactive intervention program created by Scholastic that focuses on phonics skills.

3 How does it work? The System 44 classroom is divided into 3 areas:
System 44 software Small Group Independent Reading Students will spend 20 minutes per class on the software. The other 20 minutes will be spent in small group (3 days a week) or independent reading (2 days a week).

4 System 44 Software The System 44 software provides individualized practice through its adaptive software. Adaptive software assesses students’ particular needs and individualizes learning accordingly.

5 System 44 Software There are 5 components to the System 44 Software:
The Code Word Strategies Spelling Zone Success Zone Writing Zone

6 Small Group Students will be placed in a small group based on their Lexile (reading ability) level. The small group will work through Literacy Design Modules created by Scholastic in the 44Book. Students receive guided practice and direct instruction while reading passages and learning new vocabulary.

7 Independent Reading Students will be reading Scholastic’s high interest, Lexile leveled independent reading books. Each book comes with a graphic organizer to aid in comprehension. Students will take a Reading Counts quiz on their independent reading book when they are finished.

8 Will there be homework? OF COURSE!!! The students NEED to be reading at home! Remember, practice makes…better! I require that students read at home and have 3 AR points (from books on their level) each month. This is how I know they are reading outside of school. This will be a grade!!!

9 How can my student test out?
Students are placed into System 44 based on their STAR scores (25th% and below), a below grade level Lexile score from the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) and their Scholastic Phonics Inventory (SPI) score. In order for a student to show they no longer need System 44, they need to either complete the 25 series of the software or score in the advanced decoder level of the Scholastic Phonics Inventory (SPI).
