Presented By: Tyler Andazola, Angela Price Erik Erikson

Background Born June 15 1902- May 12 1994 Frankfurt Germany Jewish Moved to US 1933 Taught @ Harvard Medical School, UC Berkley, Yale, San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute, Austen Riggs Center, Center for Advanced Studies

Background Cont. Changed name- Erik Homberger to Erik H. Erikson Private Practice- Child Psychoanalysis

Erikson’s Basic Theory The world gets bigger as we go along Failure is cumulative The concept is if you faced horrendous circumstances in your childhood then it may be harder to overcome in your later stages of life vs. someone who had less challenges to face in their childhood. You are born with certain traits like optimism vs. pessimisum, but other feelings like inferiority vs. competence are developed based on the challenges and support received when growing up.

8 Stages of Development from Birth to Death Infancy Birth-18 months Trust vs. Mistrust Early childhood: 18 month-3 yrs autonomy vs. Shame Play age 3-5yrs Initiative vs. Guilt School age 6-12 yrs Industry vs. Inferiority

8 Stages Cont. Adolescence: Young adulthood: Middle adulthood 12-18 yrs Identity vs. Role confusion Young adulthood: 18-5 yrs Intimacy & solidarity vs. isolation Middle adulthood 35-55 or 65 yrs Generativity vs. Self Absorption Late adulthood: 65-death Integrity vs. Despair

Influences Erickson was an anthropologist society and human development. Non-Freudians and Freudians. social factors role and expanding the stages of development beyond childhood influential among professional clinical psychologists and counselors.

Influences Cont. Erickson and Jean Piaget Erickson theory on importance of child’s development Piaget emphasis on cognitive development Erickson emphasis on child’s development is related to child’s success.

Critique Erickson and James Marcia(particularly regarding adolescence) Marcia’s work did show evidence and relates adolescence and childhood. If you resolve your childhood that will successfully resolve crisis of adolescence Marcia also questioned about Erickson theory. He also questioned that if the stages only occurred are within the age ranges Erickson suggests. However Erickson theory occurs throughout a lifetime. Age groups best describe when conflicts become most important.
