1 DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY

2 Erik Erikson Thought our personality was influenced by our experiences with others. Stages of Psychosocial Development. Each stage centers on a social conflict. Failure to successfully complete a stage can result in a reduced ability to complete further stages and unhealthy personality and sense of self These stages can be resolved successfully at a later time. There are 8 stages

3 1. Trust v. Mistrust (Birth-1)
Can a baby trust the world to fulfill its needs? Trust is developed when needs are met (i.e. hunger, comfort) The trust or mistrust they develop can carry on with the child for the rest of their lives. When need for trust is not met, frustration and withdrawal occurs

4 2. Autonomy V. Shame & Doubt (2-3 years)
Toddlers begin to control their bodies (toilet training). Supportive environments foster autonomy (independence) Can they learn control or will they doubt themselves?

5 3. Initiative V. Guilt (3-5 years)
Word turns from “NO” to “WHY?” Want to understand the world and ask questions. Is there curiosity encouraged or scolded? Initiative increases with sense of responsibility Anxiety about initiating tasks can lead to guilt

6 4. Industry v. Inferiority (6-puberty)
School begins We are for the first time evaluated by a formal system and our peers. Do we feel good or bad about our accomplishments? Unsuccessful learning experiences can lead to us feeling bad about ourselves inferiority complex.

7 5. Identity v. Role Confusion (Teens-20s)
In our teenage years we try out different roles. Who am I? What group do I fit in with? If I do not find myself I may develop an identity crisis.

8 6. Intimacy v. Isolation (20’s – 40’s)
Have to balance work and relationships. What are my priorities? Well informed identity allows close relationships and friendships to form Isolation can occur if unformed identity limits experiences that can harm your ego

9 7.Generativity v. Stagnation (40-60)
Am I happy with what I created? Generativity- "making your mark" on the world, through caring for others, creating things, accomplishing things that make the world better Stagnation - when you fail to find a way to contribute, it occurs out of a sense of lack of purpose

10 8. Integrity v. Despair (Late 60’s onwards)
Look back on life. Was my life meaningful (integrity) or do I have regrets? Fear of death or dependency on others can cause despair
