Agenda What are SATs? What do the children have to do? Teacher Assessment

SATs National curriculum tests which are set by the government. They cover reading, maths, spelling, grammar and punctuation. These tests are used to inform the ongoing assessment of your child. The tests take place across May. The children will do a different test each week. The main information used is Teacher Assessment.

Reading This is made up of 2 papers. The first has the information and questions all in one book. The other is a separate book and answer paper. Neither paper are strictly time but the guidelines are 30 minutes for the first paper and 40 minutes for the second paper.

Maths The children take two maths tests. One paper is arithmetic and the other paper is reasoning. There are no strict time limits for each paper but guidance says the arithmetic paper should take around 20 minutes. The reasoning paper should take around 35 minutes.

Reasoning Paper

Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation There are 2 papers which cover these areas. The spelling paper is 20 words that children need to be able to write correctly. These can be high frequency words or words they have been learning in phonics. The second paper looks rules that are related to grammar and punctuation.

Scaled scores The test are marked by the teacher. The results are reported by what is known as a scaled score. A score below 100 indicates that a child needs more support. A score of 100 suggests a child is working at or above expectations for their age. Schools do not publish the test results, and they are not sent to the government.

Scaled Scores contd… You will receive your normal school report. In the report it will say whether your child is work towards the expected standard, at the expected standard or working at greater depth. The tests are only one part of the ongoing teacher assessment.

How can you support at home? Please do not go out and buy lots of SATs booklets! The children will do papers in school so they understand how they work. Read as regularly as possible. Ask children questions about the book. Practise the spellings that are sent home. Count, cook, let children pay for items at the shop. Complete the homework.
