Year 2 SATs 2019 Past papers out

What are SATS?

What are SATs? A series of tasks used to inform a teacher assessment of what your child has learned. Each child will be judged at either “at” the expected standard for the end of KEy Stage 1, working towards it or exceeding it. In Key Stage 1 the greatest emphasis is placed on gathering evidence of what children can do rather than the test.

Results: You CANNOT fail SATs
It is expected that the “average” Year 2 child be working ‘at’ within age related expectations by the end of the year. Some children will be working ‘above’ the age related expectations.

When do the tests take place?
May 2019 Small groups Not strictly timed

The Reading Test Two papers - all children are given access to them both. Each test takes approximately minutes to complete. Children will be shown how to answer the questions in normal lesson time.

The Reading Test Children can refer back to the texts in the reading booklet throughout the tests. Questions are: shorter closed response items and longer, more open response types. Questions are worth 1,2 or 3 marks.

English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test
The test will assess children’s ability in grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary. The first test lasts 45 minutes and is worth 50 marks. A separate spelling test which lasts 15 minutes and is worth 20 marks. Pupil’s writing will be assessed throughout the year by teachers.

2018 Spelling List

Mathematics Tests Paper 1 is an arithmetic paper which lasts about 30 minutes. Papers 2 is a reasoning paper, which lasts about 40 minutes. The children’s marks are combined and that score is then used to work out what standard they are at. They are not allowed to use any physical resources in the tests.

Scoring and reporting The scores will be converted to a ‘scaled score’. We currently know that 100 on the scaled score will be the number that demonstrates that children have reached age related standards.

Top Tips Rather than worrying about the tests, reinforce that doing your best and trying hard in lessons is the best way to do well. Don’t put too much pressure on them. Practising reading is the best revision you can do.
