SATs Meeting for Parents
2017

2. Aims of the meeting:
to inform you about Year 6 SATs and teacher assessment for 2017.
to help you to support your child and make a significant difference to their learning

3. What are SATs?
Statutory Assessment tests which all pupils take at the end of Key Stage two.
They provide a snapshot of attainment in English and Maths.
The tests will take place during the week beginning Monday 8th May 2017.

4. Changes since 2016 Tests cover the 2014 National Curriculum
No level 6 tests
No mental maths test – arithmetic test
Results will not be reported as levels but as scaled scores
100 – expected standard

6. The English Tests
There are 2 parts:
Reading
English grammar, punctuation and spelling

7. Reading Test
The English reading test will have a greater focus on fictional texts and a greater emphasis on the comprehension elements of the new curriculum.
Pupils will have a total of 1 hour to read the 3 texts in the reading booklet and complete the questions at their own pace.
There will be a mixture of genres of text. The least-demanding text will come first with the following texts increasing in level of difficulty.

8. English grammar, punctuation and spelling test
There are two papers
Paper 1: questions consists of a single test paper. Pupils will have 45 minutes to complete the test, answering the questions in the test paper. The questions are worth 50 marks in total.
Paper 2: Spelling consists of an answer booklet for pupils to complete and a test transcript to be read by the test administrator. The questions are worth 20 marks in total.

9. The Mathematic Tests There are 3 papers;
Paper 1: The arithmetic test assesses basic mathematical calculations. Pupils will have 30 minutes to complete the test. The questions will cover straightforward addition and subtraction and more complex calculations with fractions worth 1 mark each, and long divisions and long multiplications worth 2 marks each. The paper consists of 36 questions which are worth a total of 40 marks.
Papers 2 and 3 each consist of a single test paper. Pupils will have 40 minutes to complete each test, answering the questions in the test paper. Each paper will have questions worth a total of 35 marks.

10. Scaled Scores Levels are to be replaced by scaled scores.
The raw scores from the tests will be translated into a scaled score.
A scaled score of 100 will be the expected standard at the end of Y6.
The range of scaled scores is 80 to 120.
There will be scaled score for reading, GPS and mathematics.
Teacher assessment will be used to assess writing.

11. Reporting to Parents
Parents will receive the child’s scaled score for reading, GPS and mathematics and whether or not they have met the expected standard.
Teacher assessment for writing will be reported as one of the following.
growing development of the expected standard
working towards the expected standard
working at the expected standard
working at greater depth within the expected standard (based on a broad range of evidence across the curriculum)
