General Rules and Regulations Eligibility The competition is open to any Rock Engineering practitioner, who is in the possession of either a Undergraduate or Postgraduate Geotechnical Engineering Degree, Recognised Industry Qualification (ie: Strata Control Officer Certificate, Rock Engineering Certificate) Any University Employee that is currently lecturing in the field of Mining more specifically Rock Engineering. 2. Communication Any Clarification regarding the RockBowl rules must be requested by email by the 1st of September 2017 at the following address: paul.couto@harmony.co.za

General Rules and Regulations 3. Changes in the rules The organising committee has the right to make changes to the rules. This will be communicated to all participants via email and at the opening of the competition. 4. Registration Guidelines The registration form and questions/ answers must be submitted before the closing date for the team to be allowed to compete. Registration forms and questions/answers can be sent to paul.couto@harmony.co.za Each team is required to have a shirt which distinguishes them form the other competitors. Each team is required to submit ten (10) questions and answers which can be utilised in the event. References to the questions and answers need to also be included. General Rules and Regulations 5. Rules of the Competition The competition is a duel based competition between two teams, consisting of 4 members per round. A multiple choice question will appear on a screen in English. The team will then have 30 seconds to discuss the questions and select the correct answer by means of a clicker pad. Teams will compete against each other in a qualifying round, followed by a knock out round. If a team does not attend, there opposition will automatically advance to the next round within the competition. Each round will consist of 10 questions. The team with the highest score at the end of the round will be declared the winner and progress. If there is a tie, then another 5 questions will follow. The team with the highest score will then be declared the winner. If this process still results in a stalemate then the teams will enter a sudden death round.

General Rules and Regulations A game inspector will also be present to ensure that the rules are complied with and the game is played and scored in a fair manner. Technical material: technical literature on rock mechanics fundamentals, rock mechanics applied to geology engineering, civil works which encompass the following topics: Mechanical behaviour Field tests Laboratory tests Slope stability Underground excavations Characterization and classification Geology and Petrology Geotechnical modelling Rock physics Drilling geomechanics Non-technical material: the ISRM, general affairs, history, current affairs, statistics, evolution and application of rock mechanics over time in various civilizations, current events.

General Rules and Regulations Any form of communication between team players and the audience during the general questions is prohibited. Violation of communication rule implies the loss of the right to answer the question. If there is no activation of the clicker after the question has appeared, that team will not be awarded any points If a question requires multiple answers, they will be accepted in any order. If either part is wrong, the answer will be given as wrong. If in doubt about the validity of the answer, the game inspector can refer the request to a panel of the judges after the round, whose decision will be unquestionable.

General Rules and Regulations p) All players, institutional representatives (private or governmental) and other people associated with a team, are subject to the code of conduct and behaviour in a responsible and ethical manner. This includes: 1. treat all participants, organizers and the public with good manners; 2. not receive or give unlawful "assistance"; 3. do not try to fool teammates and officials of the game; 4. abide by all decisions of the tournament officials; 5. not be an accomplice of another person to "change" the outcome of the game; 6. promptly report any violations of conduct to tournament officials.
