4 years to prepare for the next stage of your life! Welcome to High School! 4 years to prepare for the next stage of your life!

What will my day look like? At Scott, students have 5 classes each day We have 3 trimesters or terms

It looks like this TERM 1 TERM 2 TERM 3 1 2 3 4 5

You will have 15 classes Most classes will have an A Part and a B Part Some classes have A—B – C Some classes are just 1 term or trimester You can see how many terms a class will be by counting the number of bubbles to fill in.

You will register for all of your classes through Infinite Campus

You need to know your student’s USERNAME AND PASSWORD Your username is your Student ID. If you do not know your student ID, you can ask one of your teachers. Your password is as follows: initial from your first name initial from your last name followed by your birth date using a 6 digit number. EXAMPLE: Jim Smith was born on May 6, 1999. His password would be: js050699 Upon initial login you will be told you have been flagged for a password change. The "old" password it is asking for is the initials and birth date password that you just entered. WE RECOMMEND that you keep the password the same, but make your initials capitals. That way you are not likely to forget it. Email portal.support@kenton.kyschools.us if you need your password reset or if the directions don’t work for you. No one at Scott has you password for Infinite Campus if you change it after your first log-in.

CCR: College and Career Ready The state of Kentucky identifies a student as being College/Career Ready if they meet certain Benchmarks on College Entrance tests The ACT, COMPASS, and KYOTE are all used to determine if a student is CCR. The PLAN test is given in the 10th grade as a “heads up” for students and counselors about who is on the road to CCR and who isn’t. We also schedule students into help classes to become CCR

What are the CCR Benchmarks? English Math Reading 18 19 20 We monitor MAP scores from grades 8-9-10 to place students in the kinds of classes they need to move them toward being CCR.

What if a student isn’t CCR? A student would have to take remedial courses in college College courses average about $1500 per course The remedial course would not count toward the student’s degree. That student’s degree would cost more than a student who did not have to take remedial courses, AND take longer to achieve.

MAP Testing MAP stands for Measures of Academic Progress. Students are tested 3 times a year. We use the Reading and Math MAP scores in making course selections that will be appropriate for students. We use MAP scores and EXPLORE scores for Prep/Prep+ Our goal is to always make sure students are moving toward being CCR.

What MAP scores should my student have? Reading Math At the End of 8th Grade 222.6 234.4 At the End of 9th Grade 222.9 235.3 At the End of 10th Grade 223.9 237.5

Prep and Prep+ This is an acceleration plan for students based on their standardized test scores. The purpose is to challenge students to go further academically than their comfort zones. Counselors look at 2 data points: 2 MAP scores or a MAP score and an EXPLORE score.

What are the scores? The scores are actually percentiles. A percentile measures one score against EVERY OTHER SCORE on that test, at the time taken. PREP = 75%ile. That means that the score is higher than 75% of the other scores. Only 25% of the scores were higher. PREP+ = 96%ile. That means that the score is higher than 96% of the other scores. Only 4% of the scores were higher.

Governor’s Scholars Program

Governor’s Scholars Program You need to begin planning now if you intend to apply for GSP. ANY Junior may apply BUT it is highly competitive and there are guidelines to follow in order to have a shot at being selected.

To be competitive for GSP GPA of 3.75 or higher Accelerated, Advanced, and Honors classes in more than one area High Test Scores: ACT 25—PSAT Selection Index at the 85%ile – SAT 1760 total score A variety of extra curricular activities in which the student has grown in responsibilities A variety of Service Activities (paid and volunteer) A listing of Honors and Awards: School, Local, Regional, State, National Leadership Project Proposal 250-350 words Writing Entry of 500 words maximum

What’s the GSP Payoff? Full tuition at Kentucky colleges and universities Many times, out of state colleges and universities will match those funds…but not a guarantee Braggin’ Rights

What should students do to prepare for GSP? Take Accelerated/Advanced courses Keep grades up Get involved in school/community activities Be a part of a service project or get a part-time job that is in some way related to something you might want to do in the future…even if you have to spin it. Get on-line and look at the current GSP application so you will know what to expect. Take the ACT after your sophomore year Take the PSAT in your sophomore AND Junior years

When will the Portal be open to register for classes? Not when it says on all the Course Registration Worksheets! We expect the Portal to be open Monday, March 3th . It will remain open until March 17th The Scott counselors will be available 9-3 on Saturday, March 8st . You may register for classes on Scott’s computers. Woodland’s computer lab will be open to students before school to register for courses. You can register from any internet location.
