Unit 1 The World

Bell Work 8/19 In your binder create a sheet that is for bell work. How would you describe the earth to a visitor from another planet?

What is Geography? Geography “Earth description” This is the study of the distribution and interaction of physical and human features on the earth.

What do geographers do? They look for patterns and connections between people and the land that they live on.

SPATIAL PLACES & REGIONS HUMAN SYSTEMS Elements of Geography PHYSICAL SYSTEMS ENVIRONMENT & SOCIETY ***USES OF GEOGRAPHY

World in Spatial Terms Absolute location Relative location Exact location Uses latitude and longitude to create a grid system Relative location Location of one place compared to another

Latitude and Longitude These imaginary lines help to locate places north and south. The equator is at zero-degrees latitude. Longitude These imaginary lines help to locate places east and west. The prime meridian is the zero-degree line of longitude.

Places and Regions Place: a space with physical and human meaning Region: places connected by similar factors Formal Region: a place with a common characteristic (The Corn Belt- Iowa/Illinois) Functional Region: central place and surrounding area (Metropolitan areas-LA) Perceptual Region: a place grouped together by popular belief and no objective data (heartland)

Physical Systems There are many physical processes that shape the patterns of earth's surface Ocean currents, ecosystems, wind patterns, volcanoes Geographers look at how physical features interact with plant and animal life to create, support, or change ecosystems. Ecosystem: community of plants and animals that depend upon one another, and their surroundings, for survival

Human Systems Throughout history people have migrated This has caused the development of different cultures that have spread across the Earth’s surface The characteristics, distribution, and complexity of earth's cultural mosaics have all been impacted because of the migratory patterns of early humans and also by the migration that still takes place Through migration and the quest for power there have been great and grave impacts on the worlds history We will be discussing those throughout the year

Environment and Society Throughout history people have changed the planet to suit their needs Dams, Bridges, Houses etc… The physical world has impacted how humans live their lives Transportation, underground cities Mountains and deserts can pose barriers Resources have also played a major impact in the story of man Those who have thrive, those who have not perish

Uses of Geography Geography can be used to interpret the past Using geography you can understand what cultural issues cause problems and how maps have changed over time We can also use geographic information to see where we are going We can use maps and statistics to gauge how we will be living our lives in the future

15 MINUTES TO FINISH POSTER 1. Title (3 points) 2. Explanation of your theme (7 points) a. What it is? b. How does it relate to the study of geography? c. Why is it important? 3. Written examples of your theme (5 points) 4. Pictures illustrating your theme (5 points) 5. 1-2 minute presentation (5 points)

1-2 MINUTES INTRODUCE YOURSELVES NAME OF TOPIC DEFINITION EXPLAIN EXAMPLES

In groups, identify which of the Six Essential Elements matches the example below 10.A student uses a mental map to determine how long it will take them to get from one class to the next. 11.Investors use data and maps to determine how another region will impact their investments 12. In Florida, we wear shorts and sandals year round to stay cool 13.Europe formed the European Union in order to have a stronger economic impact on the world. 14.A city planner uses a map to determine where to build a new school. 15.The United States has a wealth of resources allowing it to become a world power. 16.Mountain chains throughout the world prevented the spread of ideas throughout the world. 17.A scientist looks at a map that displays life expectancies for people in certain regions of the world. 18.The Iron Curtain described the line where Communism started in Eastern Europe. A student uses a map to determine how Nazi Germany took over Europe during World War 2 A student draws a map to represent where different groups of students sit in the lunch room. A professional map maker designs a map to show how far away South Lake High School is away from Disney World. A map shows the migratory pattern of ducks from summer to winter. A contractor builds a dam in order to generate hydroelectric power. Nomads migrate from Asia to North America using the Bering Straight. A map identifies the trade winds which affect weather patterns. This year we will study different areas that contain common characteristics. A geographer uses data from maps to determine population density 30 years from now.
