Oral Presentation of the Teaching Plan for Module 2, Book 1

I. Teaching Material Analysis This is the 2nd module in Book 1, and the topic is “my new teachers”. It consists of three paragraphs, and each paragraph talks about one teacher.

In paragraph 1, it describes an English teacher, Mrs. Li In paragraph 1, it describes an English teacher, Mrs. Li. In paragraph 2, students will learn about a physics teacher, Mrs. Chen. In paragraph 3, the major figure is Mr. Wu, a Chinese teacher. This module is quite close to students’ daily life. Through studying this module, students are able to use the words, phrases and sentences when they want to introduce or write a person in English.

II. Teaching Objectives Language Objectives (1) In this class, I’ll teach my students these important words and phrases: avoid, patient, first impression, make progress. These words and phrases are quit frequently used in their daily life. They are useful.

(2) I’ll teach my students two important sentences: She avoids making you feel stupid! This is a verb-ing pattern. I feel I’m going to make progress with her. There is an important phrase: make progress.

2. Ability Objectives Enable students to consolidate the V-ing pattern. Help students to remember some verbs followed by V–ing, such as avoid, like, hate. (2)Through studying the text, I will try to improve the reading ability of the students, and help them use these new words and phrases in their daily life.

3. Moral Objectives Help students to understand the criteria for a good teacher. After studying this module, it also can strengthen unity the spirit of the whole class as well as the emotion between teachers and students. (2) Help the students to cherish the relationship with their teachers, at the same time it lays the base for the students who want to be good teachers in the future.

III. Important Points Help students to use the V-ing pattern properly in their spoken and written English. It’s an important language point; students should use it without any mistakes. 2. Help students to understand the important words, phrases, such as avoid, first impression. These useful words and phrases can enrich students’ vocabulary and improve their English ability.

IV. Difficult Points Learn to catch the main idea of the whole text, and use V-ing pattern correctly. There are many verbs that can be followed by V-ing. Because there is no royal road to learning, students have to spend a lot of time in remembering these verbs. 2. Help students to describe a person. Students should know how to use English in their daily life; in addition, students should be the master in language studying.

V. Teaching Methods The main teaching methods include: skimming, scanning, communicative approach, task-based method, pair-work, answer and question. Skimming is a good way to train students to read quickly to get the gist, i.e. the main idea of the text.

Scanning teaches students to read for the specific information. Communicative approach can develop students’ communicative competence. Task-based method can provide a context for grammar teaching and form-focused activities.

2. Teaching Aids If it is a media classroom, I’ll choose to use computer to show PPT to students about the text. If not, I’ll use the traditional aids, like blackboard and chalk to write down some important information.

VI. Learning Methods Skimming and scanning are two helpful cognitive strategies. In the reading class, students can use skimming to get the gist, i.e. the main idea of the text, and use scanning to read for the specific information. According to the questions, students are required to do pair-work with their partners to work out the answers to the questions.

By using communicative strategy, students are required to be able to communicate with other students and teachers. In this way, they will practice their pronunciation and skills. As for resourcing strategy, students can choose other ways to get information about this text before or after the class. For example, search the Internet, read other useful books or listen to the radio.

VII. Teaching Procedures Step I Greeting and revision Greeting is a necessary part of the class, in which teacher can communicate with students naturally. By greeting, I am telling students that it’s time for class, and everyone should look at me. As for revision, it can help students to recall what they have learned in the last class. .

Step II Lead-in I’ll ask one question to begin this class:“I think most of you used to write compositions about your teachers in the Chinese class, right? Then how about using English to describe your teachers?” In order to answer the question, students will search information in their minds or share their ideas with partners. Then, I’ll ask some students to describe me. In this way, the class will be active

Step III Skimming Before asking students to skim the text, I’ll ask them to look at the questions in the pre-reading part. By giving them this task, students can get a general idea about the text, and they can do some predictions.

While they are reading, they can read with questions, because predicting is a helpful way to deal with reading part. After students finishing reading, I’ll check the answers by asking some students. Through this, I can know the effect of their skimming.

Step IV Scanning By skimming, students may have a general idea about the text, so, next, I’ll train students to scan the text for some specific information. Also, before scanning, I’ll ask students to read the questions in part 4.

After scanning, students can work with their partners or write the answers in a paper. In case there will be some difficult questions, I’ll check the answers together, and lead them to get the right answers. Through this, students can mainly get the information about the text. Meanwhile, students’ scanning skills can be improved.

Step Ⅴ Reading and comprehending In this procedure, I’ll help students to get more information from the text, and have a better understanding. Students should sum up the main ideas by themselves first, then discuss with their partners. When they finish it, I’ll write down these characters. In this way, students can have an ability to find the main characters of each teacher.

2. Then I’ll ask students to read these important words after me 2. Then I’ll ask students to read these important words after me. Through this, students can consolidate the words in the text and keep these in their minds. 3. At last, I’ll give students an example of how to describe a teacher. Through this, students can know how to describe their favorite teacher.

Step Ⅵ Explanation In the explanation procedure, I’ll explain the text in detail and deal with some difficult language points.

1. First, I’ll explain the difficult words to students. Impression, it’s a noun. We can say to get a good/bad impression of sb/sth. Then, I’ll teach students the phrase: make an impression on sb. In the text, first impression means how someone seems to you the first time you meet him. It’s useful for students to describe a person.

b. “Avoid” is a verb; it means to prevent sth bad from happening b. “Avoid” is a verb; it means to prevent sth bad from happening. It’s followed by V-ing. In this way, students can remember this word. c. “I feel I’m going to make progress with her.” means “In Mrs. Li’s class, I feel my English will be improved.” “Make progress” is used to show the development in the study or work.

2. Next, I’ll focus on the grammar I’ll explain the V-ing pattern, then, I’ll give students some words and phrases that are followed by V-ing. In this way, students can have a better understanding of the grammar.

3. I’ll deal with the reading skills I will explain this to students: “When you read the text for the first time, I asked you to skim the text as soon as possible. Through reading, you can have a general idea about the text mainly talked about. For the second reading, you are supposed to find specific information about some questions, this skill, we call it scanning.”

Step Ⅶ Summary In this part, I’ll make a summary about what students have learned this class. This is a three-paragraph text, and each paragraph describes a teacher.

Firstly, I’ll sum up the main characters of each teacher: Mrs Firstly, I’ll sum up the main characters of each teacher: Mrs. Li: shy, kind, patient, clearly. Mrs. Chen: strict, serious, organized, clearly. Mr. Wu: popular, energetic, amusing, good-looking. Then, I’ll go over the language points: V-ing pattern. By this, students can remember the new words, phrases, and the grammar pattern.

Step Ⅷ Homework Assignment I’ll let students to write a short passage about their favorite teacher, using the words they’ve learned today. Through this task, students can review the new words and phrases after class. Also, it can train the students’ writing skills.

VIII. Blackboard Design For the blackboard design, I’ll divide it into three parts. The left part, I’ll write down the characters of each teacher. In the middle, I’ll write down some important words and phrases. For the right part, I’ll write down the homework.
