2 The teaching material of this unit
This unit talks about festivals of many kinds in different parts of the world. The first reading briefly describes four different kinds of festivals. Two others, Qiqiao Festival and Carnival , are introduced in the rest of the unit. By studying  this unit, Ss can not only improve their English learning ability but also know more about the  festivals at home and abroad. At the same time,  we should use the opportunity to have the Ss think about the reasons for festivals and the reasons for different ways of celebrations. 2

Brief introduction: In Warming up&Pre-reading section, different kinds of practice and exercise are intended to have the students start thinking about the variety of events and festivals celebrated not only in China but also in foreign countries, which help the students predict the content of the reading passage. 11

7. Teaching steps: Step 1: Leading in (6 minutes) Greet the whole class and ask students to name some festivals home and abroad. Method: Use question-and-answer activity. Purpose: Enable the students to talk about Chinese festivals and customs in English and get to know some information about foreign festivals. 17

Step 2: Warming–up (12 minutes) Discuss three questions and then perform them: When does it take place? What does it celebrate? What do people do on that day? Method: Use Watch and Listen activity, Free Discussion method and Group work. Purpose: Enable the students to learn how to talk about Chinese festivals and customs with the new words and expressions like take place, lunar.. etc from Target language of this period . 18

Step 3: Consolidation (12minutes) Ask students to do the exercise by filling in the blanks with the correct form of the words. Purpose: The exercise is intended to enable the students to consolidate what they learned just now and how to use the target language of this period such as “take place, lunar, festival”... etc. 19

Step 4: Pre-reading (16minutes) First ask the students to do the pair-work with the questions and then discuss the information from the pictures in groups. Method: Use Watch and Listen activity, Discussion method and Group work. Purpose: Through this part, arouse the students’ interest of study and prepare for the new lesson.

Step 5: Summing up and homework (1 minute) Sum up: I want students to consolidate the  usage of Target language of this period. Train their ability of do-it-yourself and looking up the information by themselves. Homework: 1. Consolidation of some words and phrases. 2. Listening to the text after class to be familiar with it. 3. Collect as much information about festivals as possible. 24

8. Blackboard design: Topic Sentence: The Spring Festival takes place on the 1st day of lunar January. Target language: take place, lunar, festival, Christmas, beauty I write the topic sentence and the target language on the blackboard in order to  tell the students that this is of importance  in this period.  25
