Transition from Early Years Gradual build in expectations Literacy and Maths Guided work with an adult Time to choose topic related games and activities Phonics lessons 4 times a week. Half an hour each afternoon in Autumn 1 for free flow.
Literacy Over the course of the year we will cover the following units: Stories with familiar settings Traditional tales and fairy stories Stories from other cultures Poetry (pattern and rhyme) Information texts Lists, labels and signs Instructions
Maths Children will cover: Addition and subtraction (incl. doubling and halving) Time Money Shape (2D and 3D) Measures (capacity, length, weight) Data handling (lists, tables, bar graphs) Division and multiplication (Summer term)

Phonics Consolidation of sounds learnt in Yr R Moving onto new sounds and alternative pronunciations of sounds Phonics Check – June 2015 Terminology: Grapheme – the written representation of a sound Phoneme – the smallest single identifiable sound Digraph – two letters which make one sound Split digraph – two letters, split, making one sound
Science Topics covered: Seasons and seasonal changes Animals, including humans Everyday materials Plants New curriculum has a bigger focus on identifying and naming trees, plants and animals.
History and Geography History Geography Changes within living memory Significant Individuals Geography Countries and capitals Local area study Hot and cold areas
Homework Reading – 10-15 minutes daily Spellings / Keywords Children are given the opportunity to change their book every morning and are regularly reminded to choose a book they haven’t read before. Reading records should be in school every day. Spellings / Keywords Words sent home on a Friday to be tested the following Friday. Children should practise both reading and spelling the words. Learn words by putting into context.
Homework – cont. Fortnightly practical task Could be Maths, Literacy or Topic based. Shouldn’t take more than 30 mins After Christmas this will change to a weekly homework task Alternating Literacy and Maths focus.
