1 Welcome to Year 2

2  Mrs Gippert – 2CG  Mrs Clarke – 2CG  Miss Gilfillan – 2G  Mrs Aitken - Learning Support Assistant/HLTA  Miss Scantlebury – Specialist Support Assistant  Mrs Reading – Learning Support Assistant  Mrs Gippert works Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in 2CG and is in school on Thursdays. Mrs Clarke works Thursday and Friday in 2CG. Miss Gilfillan is full-time in 2G. Year 2 Staff

3  2CG’s PE lessons will be on Thursday and Friday.  2G’s PE lessons will be on Monday and Thursday.  2CG and 2G’s Library visit will be on Monday. Please see a member of the Year 2 team as soon as possible if you are able to help with this. PE and Library

4  Each week a different child will be given the special person award.  They will bring home a certificate and the class mascot for the weekend. Please return them the following Monday.  Unlike Year 1 mascots you are not required to record your class mascot’s visit. Special Person

5  Cross-curricular.  During the year we will look at familiar stories, stories by the same author, explanation texts, fairy tales, poetry and may even have a chance to do some cooking when we look at non-fiction instruction writing!  In grammar work, we focus on sentence structure, punctuation, paragraphs and spelling. Literacy

6  Phonics  Daily phonic sessions.  Phonics homework will be given every Monday (starting from 14 th September) and will be expected back every Friday.  Please support your child with their weekly phonics. Perhaps you may like to look out for the sounds your child is working on that week whilst reading together. Hotwords  Hotwords will continue as in Year 1. Children will be given six words a fortnight to learn to spell and read.  Learning Log tasks will be given as in Year 1. Phonics and Hotwords

7  As comprehension, spelling and grammar is an end of year assessment focus for Year 2 children they will have Reading comprehension lessons every other Friday in Year 2. These will alternate with spelling and grammar lessons.  Reading books will be sent home whenever they are put in the reading box in the morning. As they are now in Year 2 the expectation will be that this is done independently. First reading books will go home on Friday 11 th September.  Guided reading every Monday in Year 2. We will require some parental help and training will be given. Please speak to us if you can help. Reading

8  We will cover lots of ground in Maths, but here is a selection of some of our topics: Graphs, 2D and 3D shapes, partitioning, rounding, odd and even numbers, multiplication (“lots of”) and division (“shared into”).  Mental Maths will be every Friday.  Maths homework will be set every Friday on Mathletics. The date of the first homework is to be confirmed. We will let you know soon. Maths

9  The government are changing the way Year 2 children are assessed this year. We will be holding an information session later in the year. The SATs...

10 Independence Handing in reading books Coming into the cloakroom in the morning Putting coats etc on pegs Ties Shoelaces Taking responsibility for our uniform (especially jumpers and cardigans!) Please can parents aid this process by naming all equipment and clothing Ensure pencil cases are kept at school and kept well stocked.

11  In Year 2 children are set for Literacy and Maths. Your child will be in either Set 1 or Set 2 for each subject with appropriate levels of support.  We constantly assess the children and move them between sets when necessary. Sets

12  Phonics home learning  Reading and discussing a wide range of books and other reading materials, e.g. e-books, newspapers, comics, library books etc.  Mathletics and other maths games, i.e. ‘Hit The Button’ which is excellent for number bonds/times tables etc.  Learning logs  Encouraging speaking and listening skills  Most importantly, regular communication with us.
