Chapter 1 Understanding Health and Wellness

Do you know someone who you would describe as “healthy”?  What kinds of healthy traits do they demonstrate? (List as many traits as you can think of) What is Health?

Think about the traits you listed for your “healthy” person.  What kind of healthy traits do they demonstrate?  Maybe they just “look” healthy. Looking fit and feeling well are important, but good health does not stop there! What is Health?

Samantha eats plenty of fruits and vegetables, each day. Three days a week, she runs two miles after school. However, some mornings she has a hard time getting up because she stayed up too late the night before. On those days, Samantha is cranky and argues with her friends. She is also too tried to pay attention in class. Is Samantha as healthy as she could be? Three Parts of Good Health

Good health includes:  Getting along well with others  Feeling good about yourself Health = a combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. These different parts affect each other throughout your life. (they are like sides of a triangle) You need all three sides to complete the triangle, and each side supports the other two sides to make up your total health. What is Health?

One side of the Health triangle is your Physical Health. Physical Health involves conditioning of your body. As well as:  Eating a well-balanced diet  Doing plenty of physical activity (sports, individual fitness activities, etc.)  Getting plenty of sleep (at least 9 hours!)  See your doctor and your dentist for regular checkups  Wear a safety belt when your ride in a vehicle.  Wearing proper protective gear when involved in physical activities. Your Health Triangle

One side of the Health triangle is your Physical Health. Some activities can harm your physical health. What are some activities that you can think of that can harm your physical health? Your Health Triangle

Another side of the Health triangle is your Mental/Emotional Health. Mental Health = refers to your ability of solve problems and handle the daily events of your life. Good mental/emotional health involves (includes) feelings like happiness, sadness, and anger. If you are mentally and emotionally healthy, you can face challenges in a positive and realistic way. Your Health Triangle

Another side of the Health triangle is your Mental/Emotional Health. You are patient with yourself when learning new subjects or new skills. You understand that everyone makes mistakes – even you! Making healthful choices, keeping promises, taking responsibility for your actions = feel good about yourself! Your Health Triangle

The last side of the Health triangle is your Social Health. Social Health = how you relate to people at home, at school, and everywhere else in your world. Strong friendships/family relationships = signs of good social health. Skills you can develop for building and maintaining relationships:  Be friendly and open toward other people  Be supportive of family members and friends  Show friends and family that you care  Be truthful and reliable  Be considerate and accept people for who they are  Listen carefully when friends/family need someone to talk to  Follow through when you make promises!! Your Health Triangle

The last side of the Health triangle is your Social Health. Sometimes, your opinions will differ from those of others. When you disagree, choose your words carefully. Pay attention to your tone of voice. You can disagree and express your opinions. However, you do not have to argue or show disrespect! Your Health Triangle

What is the difference between Health and Wellness? Wellness = a state of well-being or balanced health over a longer period of time. Your health constantly changes. Your overall health at any given time is a kind of snapshot of your physical, mental/emotional, and social health. Your overall wellness takes a longer view. It is a balance of all three sides of your health triangle over weeks and months. Wellness and Total Health

What is the difference between Health and Wellness? How can you maintain overall wellness?  Practice good health habits (nutrition, doctors appt., etc.)  Make smart health choices for your mind and body Smart health choices that you make every day can contribute to your wellness over your lifetime. When you practice positive health behaviors, you help prevent injury, illness, disease, and other health problems. Wellness and Total Health
