2 Objectives Today we are going to learn about …
The relationship between health and wellness. Keeping your physical, mental/emotional, and social health in balance.

3 Quick Write Think about what the word “health” means to you.
Make a list of all the things you associate with being healthy. Share your list with the class. How similar was your list compared to those created by your classmates?

4 What is health? Health is a combination of physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. Physical health = the condition of your body. Mental and emotional health = your thoughts and feelings. Social health = the way you relate to other people.

5 Maintaining Your Health Balance
Being healthy means keeping your health triangle in balance. Here are some ways to work on all three sides of your health triangle: Physical: Get regular physical activity, eat nutritious foods, and get enough rest. Mental/emotional: Take time to study, to think, and to express your feelings in healthy ways. Social: Spend time with both family and friends.

6 continued … Remember! Changes you make to one side of your health triangle will also affect the other two sides. For example, if you spend more time playing sports, your physical health will improve. This will also help you feel better about yourself, improving your mental health.

7 Ways to Improve Your Physical Health
Playing sports like soccer, football, Frisbee, badminton, baseball, etc. Lifting weights Going for a jog or a bike ride Hiking Eating healthy foods

8 Wellness Wellness is a state of balanced health.
To maintain wellness, try to protect and improve your health.

9 Personal Health Activity
Take this personal health inventory to find out if you have a clear and accurate view of your own health. Think about the following statements and respond with “yes” or “no”.

10 Physical Health 1.) I get at least eight hours of sleep each night.

11 Physical Health 2.) I eat a well balanced diet, including a healthful breakfast each day.

12 Physical Health 3.) I practice good hygene.

13 Physical Health 4.) I do at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity each day.

A score of 5-6 in each area reflects good health. If you score 0-2 in any area, try to improve that part of your health triangle.
