How to Shade a Form

Your Value Scales should look like these… Step 1: Create 3 value scales 2H or HB Pencil B or 2B Pencil 4B or 6B Pencil

Highlight Mid-tone Soft Edge Hard Edge Reflected Light Cast-Shadow Shadow Step 2a: Understanding and labeling the parts of a form

Creating a Form Step 2b… Use your regular graphite drawing pencils to transform a circle into a sphere. The white of the paper will be your strongest highlight 6B graphite pencil will give you the strongest dark value. Your goal is to create smooth value shifts from light to dark. Label your spheres with the appropriate vocabulary. Steps: 1.Draw an outline of a circle 2.Decide where your light source is coming from 3.Begin shading from the opposite of the light source and move inwards 4.Create a value scale that moves inwards towards the light source shading lighter as you get closer to the highlight

Create 3 new value scales using Hatching, Cross-Hatching, and Stippling 1 for each drawing technique Must be done in pen!!! Step 3:

Hatching Cross-Hatching Stippling

Drawing Techniques : Pick one of the 3 techniques here and create one more sphere. Use Pen Do not need to label Hatching (parallel lines) Cross-Hatching (crisscross) Stippling (dots) Step 4 part B :

Step 5: Use Cross Contour to describe a Form Contour Line the contour of a subject by drawing lines that result in a drawing that is essentially an outline Cross-Contour Line deals with illustrating the way an object sits in space; describing its form

Step 6: Complete the color wheel…Yellow, YG, Green, BG, Blue, BV, Violet, RV, Red, RO, Orange, YO, Neutrals = Browns/Greys created by mixing complimentary colors ( colors that are opposite on the color wheel). Complimentary Colors Green + Red Orange + Blue Yellow + Violet

Step 6b : Create one more form…! Use at least 5 colors!!! Must have a complimentary set (opposite on the color wheel) in Shadow and Cast-Shadow Do NOT need to label

Composition is the placement or arrangement of visual elements… Good Composition happens when you are applying your PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN! Focus here is really on the “Rule of Thirds”

Your Mixed Media Still Life Use your phone to experiment with composition Draw out 3 different (contour line drawing) compositions in your sketchbook Choose your favorite one and try to imagine which parts go with what technique

Reminders Graphite Pencil Value Full range of value Smooth transitions from light to dark value Follow the contours of your object when you shade Stippling (cross-hatching or hatching) Purposeful Marks NO OUTLINE Done in sharpie Colored Pencil At least 7 colors used SMOOTH shift between colors Details at the end
