2 The Element of Art: Value
Value: Tone in an object or drawing. The degree of LIGHTNESS or DARKNESS in a color.

3 Value can: Create contrast – the difference between light and dark
Create form – the illusion of 3D shapes Create texture – the surface quality of an object Create variation – using different values to create interest in an art piece; variation in value helps “set the mood” of the piece

4 Value creating Contrast: The contrast between the bright highlights and the dark shadows.

5 Value creating Form: Value makes the light bulbs and cloth appear 3D on a flat piece of paper.

6 Value creating Texture: Value creates the cat’s fur.

7 Value creating Variety: Using different values in the same drawing.

Chiaroscuro: Italian word meaning light emerging from dark. A gradual change in value Crosshatching: Using intersecting lines to show value. Stippling: Using dots to show value. Scribble: Using scribbled lines to show value.
