1 Shading and Value

2 What is value? The lightness or darkness of a colour.
Value scales show various shades of a colour from dark to light.

3 Shading Shading used to fill in line (contour) drawings to give them depth and dimension. The areas you shade depend on your light source. If the area is closer to the light, it will be brighter, or white. The further away from the light source, the darker you shading will be.

5 Hold your pencil like this when you shade.
Regular shading with a pencil simply depends on how light or hard you press you pencil into the paper. To smooth your shading, use a stump or tortillion to blend your pencil into the paper.

6 Different types of shading
There are different types of shading that can be used with a pencil or with other media like pen or markers. You get your values not by pressing light or hard, but by adding more or less elements to a set area. The more lines in an area, the DARKER it appears. The less lines, the LIGHTER it appears.
