Presentation on theme: "Value Value is an element of design."— Presentation transcript:

1 Value Value is an element of design.
Value is defined as the lights and darks in an art work. Value can be black, white and ranges of grays or it can be a color and the lights(tints) and darks (shades) of that color.

2 Value can be created with:
Any medium - pencil, pen, paint, pastel, etc. Lines - hatching, cross hatching, random lines. Textures Dots - stippling, pointilism

3 Objective: Value Technique Assignment 1
Create 5 value scales with a range of 7 Pencil value Hatching Cross hatching Stippling Color value

4 How to create a scale Use a ruler to draw a 1 inch by 7 inch rectangle. Use a ruler to divide the rectangle into 7 equal blocks One end of the scale will be the darkest value (black). The other end of the scale will be white. Each of the center blocks should show the gray value scale making a transition from light to black. Each block must be a different value.

5 PENCIL VALUE The pencil value should have a smooth surface. Use light, smooth strokes and build up the value by overlapping layers of pencil.

6 HATCHING Hatching is done with a series of parallel lines.
Different values are achieved by spacing. The closer together the lines are, the darker the value will be.

7 CROSS-HATCHING Cross-hatching is done with a series of criss-crossing parallel lines. Different values are achieved by spacing and by placing the layers of lines at different angle. The more layers of cross-hatching, the darker the value will be.

8 STIPPLING Stippling is done with a series of placed dots.
Different values are achieved by spacing. The closer together the dots are, the darker the value will be.

9 COLOR VALUE Monochromatic color
The lights and darks in color is achieved with tints and shades. Add white to a color to make it lighter. (tint) Add black to a color to make it darker. (shade)

10 Grading Rubric one grade for each scale (5 grades)
