PRHS Physical Education Department I. The Effects of Tobacco A. Tobacco Contains Nicotine: Nicotine is the addictive drug found in tobacco leaves. B. Stimulant: is a drug that increases the action of the central nervous system, heart and other organs.

PRHS Physical Education Department II. Cigarette Smoke A. Carcinogen is a caner causing substance. (in 1992 the environmental protection agency classified environmental tobacco smoke, or second hand spoke as a group A carcinogen, which is the most dangerous type.) B. Carbon Monoxide: is a colorless, odorless and poisonous gas that is taken up more readily by the blood than oxygen. C. Tar: a thick stick, dark fluid produced when tobacco burns, tar penetrates the smoker’s respiratory system, it destroys cilia.

Smokeless tobacco: is tobacco that is sniffed through the nose, held in the mouth, or chewed. 1.Contains about 2-3 times more nicotine of a single cigarette. 2.Can cause leukoplakia: a thickened white leathery looking spots on the inside of the mouth that can develop into oral cancer.
