It doesn’t have to be that way! 1. Make slides accessible for students to take notes on (i.e., print or post slides) 2. Minimize the number of words on each screen 3. Use animations to pace the flow of presentation 4. Use images and videos to illustrate points

Printing or posting slides  I post or print simplified versions of my slides for students  Keep jargon-y definitions  Lose images (that don’t belong to me) and examples WHAT STUDENTS HAVE IN FRONT OF THEM:

What is an “Attitude”?  “Learned evaluative response, directed at specific objects, which is relatively enduring and influences and motivates our behavior towards those objects” (Lippa, 1994)  … huh?

Preparing Hand outs  How To  Save as PDF  Click “options” and choose “handouts”

Minimizing Words on the Screen Too Many Words!

Minimizing Words on the Screen  Either split the words up across multiple slides…

Minimizing Words on the Screen  Or, cut words and use the blanks to generate discussion

Using Animations  Animations (like “appear” and “disappear”) allow you to pace the flow of information  Keeps students focused on the right spot  (I’m not suggesting you use the “fancy” animations which might just be distracting)

Using Animations  Participants read that “Jack” had been selected from a group of 100 men and were asked “What is the probability that Jack is an engineer?”  Base Rate Info: ½ told 30 were engineers ½ told 70 were engineers  Consistency Info: 1/3 told no info 1/3 told engineer consistent 1/3 told engineer inconsistent  Results?  Participants read that “Jack” had been selected from a group of 100 men and were asked “What is the probability that Jack is an engineer?”  Base Rate Info: ½ told 30 were engineers ½ told 70 were engineers  Consistency Info: 1/3 told no info 1/3 told engineer consistent 1/3 told engineer inconsistent  Results? BADGOOD

Using Animations BADGOOD Probability

Animations – How To  Click on “animations” in the tool bar  Choose between entrance, exit, and emphasis options  Can change the order of appearance, or choose for things to auto-advance

Use Images and Videos  Power Point allows for more than just lectures

Use Images and Videos  Images and videos help to illustrate points  And, importantly, can generate discussion

Image & Video How To  Images  copy and paste from your own photos, the internet, etc.  Videos/Audio  can embed them directly by clicking “insert” then “video” and choosing whether it is from a file or a website

In Conclusion…
