MORE Story Elements

Foreshadowing A hint about an event that will occur later in the story. A reader can make predictions based on the information given. Example: In Star Wars, Episode II, Obi-Wan is quoted as saying to Anakin, "Why do I get the feeling you’re going to be the death of me?" He is later killed by Anakin. Example Note: “Infer” means to read “between the lines” – inferring can help you make predictions.

Author’s Purpose Authors have a purpose in mind when writing: entertain, debate, analyze, persuade, inform, etc. They consider their audience when deciding on a subject, purpose for writing, and the tone and style in which to write.

Dialogue The words that characters speak aloud. Example: Susie told Jeff that she was going to the mall. VS Susie told Jeff, “I’m going to the mall.”

Tone Shows the writer’s attitude toward his or her subject (humorous, serious, impatient, sad, etc.).

Symbol Something concrete—such as a person, place, or object—that signifies something abstract, something more than just itself, such as a concept or an idea. Examples: Examples  Dove is a symbol of peace.  Red rose or red color stands for love or romance.  Black color is a symbol that represents evil or death.  The American flag represents freedom.

Minor Characters The less-important characters in the story
