Dear Parent/Guardian; Your child has been identified by PCHS Gr. 9 Team as having the personality traits, behaviour, as well as work ethic to be a potentially strong leader. Thus, your child has been recommended to take part in the new Grade Nine Leadership program we are pleased to offer Friday afternoons during regularly scheduled Option class time. Your child will attend their option class as per usual Monday – Thursday; your child has been excused from this option by their option teacher, without penalty, for the Friday block. As part of the grade nine Alberta Education Health and Life Skills curriculum your child will be spending class time learning the ‘theory’ of what good leadership entails. Your child will also be involved in various leadership activities, both in and outside of the school, throughout the remainder of the year. Our focus is to help students learn what leadership is, identify their own leadership qualities, understand how they can improve their leadership skills as well as give them practical application opportunities to put skills and knowledge to use. The course is being lead by Paula Chapman, a teacher at PCHS who has many years of sport coaching, cognitive coaching and leadership experience. Please give your child and yourself a “big high five and hug” as it is a compliment to have been chosen to participate in our leadership class! Leadership Six– Lesson One How Leadership has changed –theory component, application Why Leadership? – Leaders make good followers Everyone will sometime take a leadership role Power, control, give direction Society needs leaders Managers/Bosses look for leaders Entrepreneur, own businesses Leadership: the art of motivation a group of people towards achieving a common goal -the capacity, or ability, to lead “art” – because it can be done at different levels, and everyone does it differently. “motivation” – to encourage, to make happen, etc. may be POSITIVE, or NEGATIVE. (threaten, take away, punish, fear, cheering. Leadership is hard to define, but every day we tell people they are good leaders, or the could be good leaders, or they should be leaders….but we never actually define what leadership is…. TASK: Write out the names of 3 people you consider to be leaders and write 2 things about them that make them leaders in your opinion. Building Blocks of Leadership: Initiative: the first of a series of actions, a leading action, readiness and ability, to begin, get going, start Anticipate: guess, predict, get ready for next Eg. Of initiative and action in gym – gym for for assembly, gym class after, cleaning up gym. Coming in after lunch, room is messy, cleaning, sweeping, straightening desks, etc. TASK: Write out ONE situation that has occurred in you life where you have shown initiative and have taken action.
