Presentation transcript:

As Geographers we will: Explore maps and atlases to investigate the fantasy worlds our monsters might inhabit. As Designers we will: Learn about simple mechanisms Explore levers. As Artists we will: create a variety of monsters using a variety of techniques and media, including collage, painting, drawing and sculpture. As Scientists we will explore: forces simple electrical circuits Habitats & classification of animals As people concerned with our environment we will: Continue to recycle our paper, milk bottles and compost our fruit. Consider the different environments our ‘monsters’ would like to live in, and how they are suited to that environment. Throughout our topic there will be many opportunities to develop our English skills including: Developing descriptive language for the monsters’ appearance and character and the setting they might inhabit. Writing letters Writing reports of monster sitings in Martley! Writing adverts. Writing instructions. Writing design reports and evaluations of monster machines. Writing stories. Comparing and contrasting different author styles and techniques used in a variety of monster books. In our spiritual and moral development we will Explore the 5 core values of Martley CE Primary school : Committment, Co-operation Courage, Compassion and Creativity. ©2010 Chris Quigley Education ltd Areas of learning Environment Spiritual and moral Monsters! Using English and communication Maple-Summer 2016

Learning across the curriculum Personal development Using mathematics Using ICT Subject Curriculum Coverage Geography Science and design technology Art In addition to our Monster topic we will also be exploring: As we explore the journeys of the monsters we will use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement, including movement in a straight line and distinguishing between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-quarter turns (clockwise and anti-clockwise). We will use co-ordinates to locate simple grid references on maps. As we create different monsters and their machines we will measure, record, compare, describe and solve practical problems using lengths and heights. mass/weight. capacity and volume. time. We will be looking at internet safety, and how we can stay safe whilst using the internet and other digital devices. We will also be exploring how to code using fun and interesting games. R.E Exploring the question: ‘What can we learn from sacred books?’ The story of Joseph and his brothers As we explore the fantasy destinations and homelands of our monsters we will : use google maps and other maps/atlases Use aerial images and plan perspectives to recognise landmarks and basic physical features. Name, locate and identify characteristics of the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas. Name and locate the world’s continents and oceans. Identify the key features of a location in order to say whether it is a city, town, village, coastal or rural area. Use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and its countries. Design and create a catapult to feed our monsters safely from a distance! We will explore levers, fulcrums and forces. We will refine our catapult for accuracy. We will report on our design process and evaluate our product. We will explore simple electrical circuits, including how to make a bulb light and a buzzer buzz to enhance our monster designs. We will consider different habitats & consider the suitability of environments for our monsters and how they would need to adapt. We will use our monsters to help us to use identify, classify & observe, including animals. We will consider growth, basic needs, exercise, food & hygiene Master techniques, including Collage: Use a combination of materials that are cut, torn and glued. Sort and arrange materials. Mix materials to create texture. Painting Use thick and thin brushes. Mix primary colours to make secondary. Add white to colours to make tints and black to colours to make tones. We will continue to develop our learning behaviours, using our Dojo avatars to help us to keep a record of our progress. This half term we will particularly focusing on developing our resilience and exploring how we can develop our understanding and use of the values of creativity, commitment, co-operation, courage and compassion. As we create our monsters we will use our imaginations and other artist impressions as stimuli to encourage us to think creatively and be confident to develop our ideas to create monsters and monster inventions, exploring different methods and materials as our ideas develop.
