1 Spring Term ‘Ocean Deep’ Year 1 Language, Literacy and Communication We will be developing the children’s understanding of story structures including describing their characters and story settings involving sea adventures. The stories include ‘the Whale’s Song’, ‘Lost and Found’ and ‘Dolphin Boy’. They will be encouraged to sequence these stories in order to develop their own ideas. The children will also be looking at non-fiction text and comparing it to fiction text. Jolly Grammar and weekly spellings will continue to be covered and joined handwriting will be introduced. Reading groups will take place on a daily basis. Mathematical Development The children will use and apply their number skills in a variety of practical tasks including using money and weighing. They will experience partitioning numbers to support their understanding of bonds to ten and place value. Weekly maths homework will continue to be sent home this term. Knowledge and Understanding of the World The children will improve their understanding of the oceans, continents and countries that make up our world. They will identify these on different maps and globes. We will also find out about the different countries which make up the British Isles, including capital cities, landmarks, rivers, seas and oceans. As part of our topic the children will research facts about Charles Darwin and follow his voyage of discovery around the world. Different sea creatures and their attributes will be researched. Creative Development Children will be encouraged to build on the skills they have previously learnt in a wide range of art experiences including colour mixing, collage and detailed drawings. They will look at Seascapes and artist’s work. The children will be composing actions and sounds to accompany a wide variety of stories and songs. Physical Development The children will continue to develop their movements through creative dance involving falling overboard at sea and exploring an island. They will continue this theme in paired work and refine their ideas further when using and travelling along the large apparatus. Personal and Social Development, Well-Being and Cultural Diversity Children will discuss the importance of having goals and how to achieve these goals. They will consider different emotions and how these can be dealt with effectively in order to improve their behaviour, relationships and personal well being. Our topics this term are ‘Going for Goal’ and ‘Good to be Me’. Welsh Language Development The focus for this term will be the children discussing their likes/ dislikes, the weather and simple facts about sea creatures and the sea side. They will be encouraged to use incidental Welsh throughout the school day.

2 Spring Term How you can help Language, Literacy and Communication Practise weekly spellings that are sent home. Support your child to improve their use of joined handwriting. Encourage your child to read the home reading book sent from school and discuss story. Books can be changed on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Mathematical Development Encourage your child to use mental maths at every opportunity. Talk to your child about any maths homework that comes home. Support your child to count amounts and give change when using money. Practise weighing through cookery activities and practical tasks. Talk about the time and the passing of time. Knowledge and Understanding of the World Encourage your child to discuss different types of sea creatures. Look at maps of the British Isles and the world. Creative Development Listen to different types of music and discuss the instruments they can identify in the music. Encourage children to extend and develop their skills in drawing and painting. Look at different artists work and techniques. Physical Development Encourage children to understand the importance of exercise. Encourage children to run, jump, skip, hop with increasing control. Send and receive a ball with more accuracy. Personal and Social Development, Well-Being and Cultural Diversity Discuss the importance of having goals that can be achieved. Recognise and discuss different emotions with your child. Welsh Language Development Highlight the Welsh language when out and about. Share any songs with your child. If you want any other phrases ask your class teacher.
