In a Spin
Year 1 Term 1
ENGLISH
As Writers, we will be losing ourselves in the magical world of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘The Wonder’ by Faye Hanson to create a range of descriptive texts. We will write character descriptions and describe the settings of our own imagined worlds. We will write lists, for example of items to take to the Mad Hatter’s tea party, and ingredients to make magical potions. Additionally we will start to write simple letters and instructions.
MATHEMATICS
As Mathematicians, we will practising understanding the place value of numbers up to 20. We will start to look at money, for example identifying the value of different coins and notes. We will begin to measure length and height, and weight and volume.
P.E (Wednesday) Forest School (Thursday)
As Athletes, we will be improving our team work skills and completing various orienteering tasks which require us to work together effectively. We will also be completing our Forest School sessions.
Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit including trainers. Children will be completing lessons outside if the weather is fine.
HISTORY
As Historians, we will be asking questions about the past. What was life like for people in Victorian times when Lewis Carroll lived? We will be finding out the answers to the questions we generate. We will compare how our lives differ from people in the past.
READING
As Readers, we will be developing our knowledge of phonics and applying it to help us decode an increasing number of unknown words. We will discuss what is happening in the books we read and will make simple inferences.
SCIENCE
As Scientists, we will be discussing the weather and the seasons. We’ll find out how the weather changes throughout the year and begin to describe it. We will observe the weather and look at its effect on nature, such as how it changes the leaves in Autumn. DT
As Designers, we will write instructions to make jam tarts and will make them in small groups. We will practise safely cutting fruit. We will taste the fruit and discuss their textures and flavours.
GEOGRAPHY
As Geographers, we will be looking at features of the land. We will discuss the terms ‘physical’ and ‘human’ and identify features around the school and in the wider world using given images. We will consider the similarities and differences between rural, coastal, and urban areas.
ART
As Artists, we will be practising our drawing techniques to create self portraits. We will then carefully choose colours and appropriate sized brushes to paint them.
