DO NOW MONDAY STUDY FOR TEST

TODAYS PLAN Demonstrate Mastery of Biology Learning Targets on a written exam. TODAYS DO Test TODAY! There will NOT be a redo for this test. The grade you get will be final. I suggest that you do your very best!

TEST EXPECTATIONS Do your best. Do your own work. Finish the test within the class period. (No staying after bell.) Remain quiet at all times. Finished? Turn your paper in to the side cart. Pick up the packet and begin to classify the terms on page 2 into one of the five categories on the page.

Populations and Ecosystems 7 th Grade Science

DO NOW MONDAY Complete page 2 in the packet that you received when you came into class today. You only need to classify each term on page 2 in one of the five categories. We will explain reasoning in a little while.

DO NOW TUESDAY Complete the Pre-Test over Populations and Ecosystems. This will not count as a test grade. Finished? Turn your paper in to the side cart. Pick up the packet and begin to classify the terms on page 3 into one of the five categories at the top of the page. If you finished this yesterday, continue working on your picture and crossword puzzle from before spring break. Remain quiet until everyone has finished.

TODAY’S PLAN To differentiate between the ecological levels of organization. TODAY’S DO We will define 6 terms in our ecosystem glossary (packet you were given when you came in to class). We will do an ecosystem card sort to classify things into one of the five ecological levels of organization. We will round robin read the Life in an Ecosystem Story. We will complete an exit slip.

Ecosystem Card Sort Table Activity You have a large piece of paper on your table. Each paper is sorted into 5 categories. You have a stack of 32 cards. These cards vary in pictures and represent one of the 5 categories. They will be face down on your table. You will take turns going around your table picking up a card and laying it in the section that you think it best represents. After each turn, everyone at your table will mark the correct category on your paper. You will not fill out the reasoning section yet!

Ecosystem Card Sort Class Activity Each student will get a card. You will have 30 seconds to decide which category it belongs. I will call out a number and that person from each table will place the card in the correct category around the room. Are all of the cards in the correct category? If not, why?

Ecosystem Card Sort Reasoning For each card, write a reasoning for your choice. Individual – one single organism Population – more than one of the same organism Community – multiple populations in one area Ecosystem - organisms and abiotic factors together Abiotic – non living factors in an ecosystem

Examples Individual: a fish Population: a school of fish in a pond Community: school of fish, frogs, and plants in a pond Ecosystem: the pond (includes both living and nonliving factors: fish, frogs, plants, soil, temperature of the pond, etc.) Abiotic: the nonliving things in the pond: water, soil, rocks, temperature of pond, etc.

Life in a Community Reading pages 6 & 7 Groups will round robin read at your table. Each person will read a paragraph and then go to the next person, until all paragraphs are read. Most tables have 4 people and there are 8 paragraphs. By the time you finish, each person should have read 2 paragraphs.

Exit Slip 1. What organisms do you interact with in your community? 2. Which ones do you eat, and which ones eat you? 3. Which ones compete for your food, and which ones provide shelter or comfort?
