1 Do Now: 9/20 Make a T-chart on the back of the notes paper. List as many abiotic and biotic factors as you can from this picture.

2 Distinguish between the biotic and abiotic parts of the environment.
Explain how populations and communities are related. Describe how the abiotic parts of the environment affect ecosystems.

3 Ecosystem Definitions

4 Ecology - the study of the interactions of organisms with one another and with their environment.

5 Niche- an organism’s role or job in the ecosystem
Habitat- an environment that provides the things an organism needs to live, grow and reproduce. Niche- an organism’s role or job in the ecosystem

6 There are Two Parts of the Environment
Abiotic- the Nonliving parts of an environment Biotic- All the Living organisms and products of organisms (If it was once living… it is considered Biotic)

7 What are some Abiotic Factors?
Water- Sunlight- Air - Temperature- Soil-

8 We organize all Biotic elements further…
Levels of Organization

9 Organism- Any living thing
Individual- One Single Organism Population- All of the individuals of one kind in a specified area at one time

10 Community- All the interacting populations in a specified area
Ecosystem- a system of interacting organisms and nonliving factors in a specified area

11 Biosphere- all the living things together in the world
