Environmental Science Chapter 1.1 7 th Grade

 Ecology: Study of the interactions of organisms with one another and with their environment.  Two Groups: 1. Biotic: All LIVING organisms that live together in an environment. 2. Abiotic: NONLIVING factors, such as water, soil, light, and temperature.

BIOTICABIOTIC  BIOTIC: All LIVING things that live together in an environment.  ABIOTIC: All NONLIVING factors such as water, soil, light, and temperature.

 List the biotic parts and abiotic parts in the picture below:

 1. Biosphere  2. Ecosystem  3. Community  4. Population  5. Organism

 Organism: an individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form.

 Population: A group of organisms of the SAME species that live together.

 Community: A group of organisms living in the same place and sharing the same characteristics.  What do all of these organisms share in common?

 Ecosystem: made up of a community of organisms and the abiotic environment of the community.  An ecologist studying the ecosystem could examine how organisms interact as well as how temperature, precipitation, and soil affects the organisms.

 Biosphere: part of Earth where life exists.  Extends from deepest parts of ocean to high in the air where plant spores drift.  Ecologists study the biosphere to see how organisms interact with the abiotic environment – Earth’s atmosphere, water, soil, and rock.
