Presentation transcript:

Latitude and Longitude ► The earth is divided into lots of lines called latitude and longitude.

Lines ► Longitude lines run north and south. ► Latitude lines run east and west. ► The lines measure distances in degrees. Longitude Latitude

Where is 0 degree? ► The equator is 0 degree latitude. ► It is an imaginary belt that runs halfway point between the North Pole and the South Pole. Where the earth is widest. Equator

Where is 0 degree? ► The prime meridian is 0 degrees longitude. This imaginary line runs through the United Kingdom, France, Spain, western Africa, and Antarctica. Has no actual geographic significance. PRIMEPRIME MERIDIANMERIDIAN

Other Important Latitudes Other Important Latitudes ► Tropic of Cancer – 23.5* N; furthest the Northern hemisphere will tilt towards the sun. ► Tropic of Capricorn – 23.5* S; furthest the Southern hemisphere will tilt towards the sun. ► 1:00 minute video 1:00 minute video 1:00 minute video

Hemispheres ► By using the equator and prime meridian, we can divide the world into four hemispheres, north, south, east, and west.

Time Zones Time Zones ► There are 24 time zones in the world. ► You enter into a new time zone every 15* Longitude.  As you move West, you “lose” an hour every new time zone. ► Always remember… going to Mississippi is like going back in time ► Always remember… going to Mississippi is like going back in time  This is true until you reach the international dateline, at which point you actually gain 24 hours ► The idea behind this is to make it Noon when the sun is at its peak no matter where you are in the world.
