4 HEMISPHERES The Northern Hemisphere includes all of the land and water between the Equator and the North Pole.

5 The Eastern and Western Hemispheres include all of the land and water divided by the Prime Meridian.

6 The equator is an imaginary line that circles the earth midway between the North Pole and the South Pole. It divides the earth into two hemispheres. The equator is designated as 0 degree, and the poles are at 90 degree North and 90 degree South.

7 Three of the most significant imaginary lines running across the surface of the earth are the equator, the Tropic of Cancer, and the Tropic of Capricorn. While the equator is the longest line of latitude on the earth (the line where the earth is widest in an east-west direction), the tropics are based on the sun's position in relation to the earth at two points of the year.

8 Lines of latitude circle the earth parallel to the Equator
Lines of latitude circle the earth parallel to the Equator. They measure distance north or south of the Equator in degrees.

9 Lines of longitude, or meridians, run from the North Pole to the South Pole. They are numbered in degrees east or west of a starting line called the Prime Meridian, which is at 0 degree longitude.

10 Lines of latitude and longitude cross one another in the form of a grid system.
If you know a place’s exact latitude north or south of the Equator, and an exact longitude east or west of the Prime Meridian, you can easily mark the absolute location of that place on a map or globe.

11 Absolute location is an exact position located on a globe.
On the opposite side of the earth from the Prime Meridian is the International Dateline, or 180 degree longitude. Relative Location is learning where a place is in relation to another place.
