2 Absolute Location

3 What is Absolute Location?
Maps are tools that show where things are on Earth. Every feature is located at a precise, or absolute, point on Earth. This precise point is called absolute location. Geographers created a global grid system that is made up of two sets of imaginary lines. The two sets of lines are known as parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude. Both sets of lines are measured in degrees. ( )

4

5 Parallels of Latitude These imaginary lines run east and west around the globe. The most important parallel of latitude in the Equator. It circles the earth exactly halfway between the North and South Poles. All lines of latitude are parallel to the Equator. The Equator measures at 0 latitude. Other important parallels of latitude include- Tropic of Cancer (23 ½ N) -Artic Circle (66 ½ N) Tropic of Capricorn (23 ½ S) -Antarctic Circle (66 ½ S)

7 Meridians of Longitude
These imaginary lines run north and south around the globe. The most important meridian of longitude is the prime meridian. Meridians of longitude are not parallel to each other. The prime meridian measures at 0 longitude. The next most important line of longitude is the International Date Line.

9 Hemispheres Geographers divide the world into imaginary halves. These halves are called hemispheres. The Equator divides the earth into two hemispheres- the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. The Prime Meridian divides the earth into two hemispheres- the Western Hemisphere and the Eastern Hemisphere.
